First in the series, I'll be dedicating this entry to Shane tem_akhI first met Shane online in the old #shadowrun channel. We talked to each other from time to time, and had met each other in person once or twice, but we didn't know each other particularly well. That changed when I got divorced. I think that if not to you, I may have been the person to say to someone about Shane vis a vis the washing up. It was, more or less, true. Slackness is one of shane's strong points.

But thats hardly the sum total of Shane. Sure, some people don't wash their dishes very often. Some people also molest kids. which one is worse, I ask you? No big stress about the answer for that; my point being that yeah, he may not wash up much but thats as much my problem with his natural level of mess as he would have with mine. Being flatmates requires compatibility and I'm not going to pretend that my anal retentiveness about dishes makes me more of a good friend or otherwise than Shane.

See, Shane is reliable, stable. Its good to know that someone will be their classical slack self. It can be pretty shocking sometimes to see people go from lazy layabout to gung-ho career person. Its called "selling out" or whatever. I guess that Shane isn't the neatest guy, but he is still a good friend you can rely on to clear a space on his lounge for you, shoveling the spent and exhausted coke bottles aside, moving on his cats and swords and RPG equipment, and always welcoming you with the same nonchalant "I just got up because you banged on my fucking door but what the hey."

The best things are that Shane is Shane, always will be. I could fly in tomorrow and I'd know exactly how Shane would greet me, say hi, and behave. Its pretty disturbing when people change. So yeah. We may have different ideas about what makes a great flatmate, or friend, but at least I'm happy to let shane be himself, and appreciate what that means.
