I bet no one is really interested in a list of books I read this year. So, instead, we'll have a post with pictures and toppling towers of books.
renay was talking over
here about her resolution to read her height in books in 2010. I was impressed by this commitment (and also by how tall Renay is)! I totally want to do something like that but I had no idea how much I needed to read to reach my height. Out of curiosity, I stacked the books I read this year to see how tall the pile is. XD
The books are sorted according to this list
here: the last one read is on the top. Books I don't have (either because I borrowed a copy from others or someone's borrowing my copy) have been substituted with books I think are about the same thickness, wrapped in white paper to hide the substitute book's title so that I won't look at this photo a few months down the road and think I've read the book. Yes, my memory is terrible like that. Two of the books I set aside -- they were illustrated children's books and did not conform to the size of the other books in the toppling tower, and when included, they caused the pile to crash to the floor. All my engineering skills failed to resolve the problem (I tried using struts, seriously), so with much sadness they were chucked out of the way.
Clicking on the photo takes you to Flickr -- you can actually read the book titles in the large version.
That's probably not too bad, for a year. But! Full disclosure! I am a midget! I'm only 145 cm tall (something around 4'9''), so that stack of books would probably come to most people's waist or somewhere thereabouts. XD
To round this off:
Number of books read: 46
Books I liked best this year (rereads not included, otherwise you'll keep seeing The Game of Kings and Howl's Moving Castle in this list each year):
- To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
- The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
- Caprice and Rondo by Dorothy Dunnett
- Red Seas under Red Skies by Scott Lynch.
Books I didn't like much:
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (omg, I can't believe how much I hated this book)
- The Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt
- Descendants of Darkness/Yami no Matsuei manga (they were rather uneven, both story-telling and art-wise).
Will I be reading my height in books in 2010? Maybe. The current plan is to clear off the to be read shelf:
That's probably more than my height. XD
