The ending to season three absolutely ate my brain when I watched it. I've always been rather obsessed with identity confusion, and as sad as it was losing Nathan, that twist just left me speechless. It launched a furiously active period of fic writing where I spent the whole season hiatus writing out short ficlets about various ways it might have gone from there. I think I also started a collection for Sythan-themed fics on FF.net.
Without giving spoilers, I'd say my anticipation might have been responsible for the disappointment for how the storyline actually plays out. It did have it's enjoyable moments, though, and while there are a few things I didn't like, I actually enjoyed season four quite a bit.
(And yeah, between time travel, telepathic trickery, shapeshifters, and healing blood it's hard to really be 100% certain that any given character point is solidly alive or dead. lol)
I've seen the two-hour premiere and the second episode, and it feels like such a different show. That's not a bad thing, just kind of weird. And as much as I'm not generally a fan of powers/magic-as-drugs metaphors, I'm really enjoying Matt's visions of Sylar. It's a different, more fun side of Sylar.
Re: Nathan, I felt really vindicated when pretty much the first thing I said on the topic at Leisure Time was "What happens when Sylar's other abilities manifest?" and that was one of the first things we saw. And as predicted, even though Nathan hasn't been around much yet, Adrian Pasdar is knocking it out of the park, both with his WTF-ing over telekinesis and electro-power, but also the way he speaks. One of his first scenes was lunch with Angela and he was so much more soft-spoken, and I immediately picked up on Nathan's use of "Ma" but 'Nathan's' use of "Mom." So, nice touch there.
I haven't figured out The Carnival at all yet, and I'm not sure how I feel about the Hiro businesss, but I'm definitely interested.
