Where I rewatch Yugioh GX, Episode 142

A recap of O'Brien being Out of Character. Because it was so much fun the first time around. Also, ridiculously circuitous conquest plan is ridiculously circuitous.

TITLE SCREEN! THE VICTOR IS RIGHTEOUS! THE SUPREME KING VS. O'BRIEN kenshin himura would strongly disagree with that notion.

Oh hey, it's Shou and Ojama Yellow. Say, do you actually plan on doing anything Shou? No? You're just going to stand there and watch as Judai's forces massacre the innocent? Well, I wouldn't have expected anything else from you, you twit. Oh, and then Ojama Yellow notices another cloaked figure watching them. Yes, because we need more characters who do nothing more than stand around and watch other characters as those other characters actually DO STUFF! And speaking of stuff, the duel between O'Brien and Judai Minion Number One, who will be referred to as Minion One from this point on. Minion One goes first and sets a monster and a card to end his turn. O'Brien's turn, he plays Blaze Cannon, and then sends that to the grave to activate Blaze Cannon Trident. O'Brien then says he'll discard Volcanic Buckshot to destroy Minion One's facedown monster for 500 points of damage, but Minion One activates his trap card, Reverse Effector; when a face-down monster you control is targeted by a spell or trap, flip it face up, and then send it to the grave. He flips his monster, and it is Magical Merchant, and the process of flipping it face-up activates its effect; Minion One picks up cards from his deck until he gets a spell or trap card, and then sends all the rest to his grave. He ends up sending twelve normal monsters from his deck to the grave. Damn. Minion One gets a spell card, and now Magical Merchant gets sent to the grave, and since Blaze Cannon Trident just lost its target, Minion One takes no damage, but O'Brien still isn't allowed to attack. However, Volcanic Buckshot does 500 damage when it gets sent to the grave, so Minion One ends up taking damage anyway. Then O'Brien summons Volcanic Edge with 1800 attack points, and activates its effect to deal 500 points of damage to Minion One. All of which leaves Minion One completely unfazed. O'Brien sets two cards, and ends his turn.

Minion One takes his turn, and activates the spell card he added to his hand with Magical Merchant's effect, Synthesis Spell, which is a Ritual Spell Card. By sacrificing Mad Dog of Darkness and Blood Vorse from his hand, he is able to Ritual Summon the level-6 Lycanthrope, with 2400 attack points. Then he equips it with Undead Lineage; when the monster attacks an opponent's monster, increase its attack power by 500, and if this monster would be destroyed, destroy this card instead. Meaning O'Brien's Blaze Cannon Trident will do him no good. Minion One attacks O'Brien's monster, destroying it for 1100 points of damage, but this prompts O'Brien to activate his permanent trap card Volcanic Armor, which deals 500 damage to the opponent every time one of your fire monsters is destroyed. Thus, Minion One has taken another 500 points of damage, but now Minion One activates Lycanthrope's effect; when it inflicts battle damage to the opponent, it then does 200 points of damage for every normal monster in his grave. He has 14, so that makes for 2800 points of damage. Ouch! Though not as much ouch as that derived from that FUCKING MUSIC CUE! OH GOD, WE'D GONE FOR SO LONG WITHOUT IT, IT WAS THE SOLE MERCY IN ALL THIS WRETCHED SHIT OF A SEASON, WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU BRING IT BACK LIKE THIS? But in any event, O'Brien is now down to 100 life points, Minion One says he'll finish off O'Brien next turn, and the other monster in the room makes noise to remind us that it exists. Oh, I didn't mention it last time, but the other monster has a talking shield that does most of the talking. This, sadly, will be relevant. O'Brien then thinks of Jim, takes his turn, draws his card, and says that his mission here is now complete. He sends Blaze Cannon Trident to the grave to special summon Volcanic Devil, the monster that he could have used to defeat Judai back at the start of the season but didn't on account of being stupid.

Then O'Brien activates his other trap card, Volcanic Mine, which special summons Bomb Tokens in defense into each empty monster zone on the opponent's side of the field, which in this case is four. Then Volcanic Devil attacks and destroys Lycanthrope for 600 points of damage, and because it destroyed a monster by battle, it activates its effect to destroy all the rest of the opponents monsters and deal 500 damage for each one. Thus, Minion One is dead, and the other monster falls onto his ass in fear. Oh, wait, Minion One clings on for a little longer, says he'll see O'Brien in hell, and then jumps out the window. He takes a damn long time to die, and for some reason turns into his disguise before finally kicking the bucket. Really, this whole subplot was only present to facilitate O'Brien being a Big Damn Hero, and no effort was put into making it make sense. And now O'Brien is coming down with the other monster all tied up. Blah blah blah, O'Brien explains how everyone was being tricked, and dear god, are those two random guards badly drawn. Blah blah blah, O'Brien must now lead the people to safety or some such nonsense, O'Brien dithers and looks at Jim's Magic McGuffin Eye before going on and on about that damn comet, and O'Brien accepts leadership responsibility. There is cheering, and everyone seems to have magically forgotten the abuses of power that the soldiers were engaging in not five minutes ago. O'Brien orders those same soldiers to the gates and trench, while the duelists are to stay with the injured in the back of the village. Oh, and a tiny little boy with a toy sword. Because god knows that the grown woman with actual powers (Maiden of Aqua) couldn't possibly be expected to protect anyone. And Shou notes that O'Brien has chosen a different path from his. Yes, it's called DOING SHIT! YOU SHOULD TRY IT SOME TIME! Suddenly, soldiers say that there appear to be troops approaching, O'Brien's shocked that the Supreme King's troops could be here so soon, and...

EYECATCH!

Big surprise, it is Edo and Ryou, along with a bunch of other Duel Spirits they apparently rescued. Yes, truly these warriors who were all defeated and captured previously will be a big help in the battle to come! Wait...blah blah blah, O'Brien asks how Edo and Ryou ended up in this place anyhow, exposition that should have been skipped over isn't, O'Brien is relieved at all the help Edo and Ryou randomly brought, seriously how the hell did they even know to come to this village, it doesn't make any sense, and O'Brien outlines his plan to attack Supreme King Judai's castle, being to go it alone. Edo and Ryou want to go too, Edo says he wants to know the truth behind Judai's change, O'Brien points out that Johan dieing was what caused Judai to flip out, the deaths of all the rest of his friends doesn't count for shit, but Ryou asks if anyone actually saw Johan die. Yes, that's right, if they can show Judai that Johan is alive after all, then everything will be all better again. You know, aside from all the unprovoked genocide, I mean. O'Brien agrees to let Ryou and Edo come with him, but he has to be the one to face the Supreme King, for Jim's sake. Then the Dancing Fairies let O'Brien know that they'll ask everyone they can about Johan, and then O'Brien wants them to tell whatever information they gather to the Supreme King's army when it attacks. Because they'll certainly stop to listen, and not just kill them where they...float. Over at the Supreme King's castle are flying monsters and useless chanting. Seriously, how exactly is Judai sustaining this army anyway? I mean, sure, he's a powerful duelist, but that doesn't cover food and water, and there's no way in hell you'll convince me that his "charisma" is making up the difference. Another Minion approaches Judai and tells him that the preparations shall soon be complete and the world will be ours, every last barren empty bit of it. And now Edo, Ryou, and O'Brien are flying in on Cyberdark Dragon's back, and they are all in disguise. Where did they get the disguises? Shut the hell up, that's where.

Also, for some reason O'Brien has that talking shield that the other monster had; apparently they want it to give them directions to the Supreme King's room. Because apparently just going for the top floor would be too straightforward and easy. Also, how the hell does this Talking Shield know the way? The whole point of it's collusion with the other minion was to get into the Supreme King's good graces...oh, just forget about it and move one. They enter the castle, which on the inside is made of crystal, but they run into the Minion who was talking to Judai earlier. he demands to know why they aren't gathered with the others to invade that last little village, O'Brien tells the Talking Shield to make something up, and it says that the other minion asked them to deliver a message to the Supreme King. This appears to satisfy the Minion, but then he swings a sword at the shield, saying that the other minion always gives him information directly. Oh drat, if only we'd taken the time to gather information! Oh well, in this case there was an impending invasion they had to stop, so it's not like when Judai insisted on pulling his best Leeroy Jenkins routine. This prompts the Talking Shield to spill the beans, which displeases O'Brien. Yes, because it had such good reason to be loyal to O'Brien's plan that had already fallen apart. And then it is killed. Whoop-di-doo. So everyone abandons the disguises that were only good for two minutes, blah blah blah, and Ryou says he'll take care of this guy, hoping that he'll be a better opponent then all the other weaklings he's slaughtered in this world. Edo and O'Brien run, Minion gives chase but Ryou browbeats it into facing him. More running, and we encounter two other minions who are palette swaps of one another, and Edo says he'll take care of them. And by that, I mean he throws the Destiny Hero Double Guy card at them, which somehow summons its monster to attack them. No, don't ask me to explain this shit, please don't. O'Brien then runs the remaining flight of stairs, and there's Supreme King Judai, standing in his empty, meaningless room in his empty, meaningless castle.

Judai is surprised that O'Brien made it here in one piece, blah blah blah, O'Brien says that his strength can't possibly be a match for Judai, who only won his last duel because the writers cheated, but he has the power of everyone's courage riding on his back. Umm, hi, Mahou Sentai Magiranger called, they said that this is their shtick, and they did it way better besides. In any event, Judai is unimpressed and says that O'Brien will die like the losing dog that he is. O'Brien says he won't fall into his own darkness, this is justice, Judai says Justice goes to the victor, and the duel begins. O'Brien goes first, and sets a card to end his turn. Judai's turn, and shock of shocks, he plays Dark Fusion, combining Featherman and Wildman into Wild Cyclone. It attacks, which activates its effect, preventing O'Brien from activating his trap card, and then when it does damage, it gets to destroy the opponent's face-down spells and traps. And it is then revealed that O'Brien's trap card was Firewall. Which requires that you have Pyro-type monsters in your grave for it to work. And O'Brien had none. Making him setting that trap completely pointless. And this is the guy who's supposedly going to defeat Supreme King Judai? Suuuuree! Judai says this is far from over, end episode.

NEXT TIME! The duel continues, Magic McGuffin Eye does its thing, EPISODE TITLE, VOLCANIC DEVIL VS. EVIL HERO OF EXTREME EVIL card of the week is lycanthrope

You know, it's kind of weird when you think about it; Supreme King Judai is supposed to be soooo powerful and dangerous, yet he only wins his first duel by virtue of the writers cheating, while his second duel only starts off strong by having his opponent make the most sub-moronic opening move possible. Of course, since Judai has always been grossly overpowered from the get-go, trying to make him more powerful is an exercise in futility.

yugioh, where i watch, season three
