“Miki?” Juri Arisugawa said, looking at her friend askance; his posture seemed different from how it usually was, lacking the refinement that came with years of fencing. “Is there something I can help you with?” She closed the book she was reading in the library, and stood up to face her friend.
“We’ve been spending a lot of time together lately, haven’t we?” Miki said, his voice just a touch higher than usual. Was he nervous about something? “More than before, I mean.”
“I suppose we have.” Indeed, playing the piano together was definitely a new experience that they’d come to share as of late. “Has something come up?” It was probably his parents; Miki’s sister had mentioned there were issues between their father and their step-mother, and it was entirely possible that they’d become serious.
“I was just curious…we’re going to be graduating soon. Leaving Ohtori Academy for good.” Miki advanced towards her, his posture now more assertive. “Were you planning on keeping in touch? I mean, suppose we ended up on opposite ends of the Earth; how far would you go to maintain the expense to keep calling, writing letters, taking trips, that sort of thing?” That look in his eye, there was something oddly familiar about it.
“I don’t know…I hadn’t really thought about that.” She really hadn’t. Somehow, even now, Juri found it difficult to think about life outside of Ohtori Academy. There was something about the school that bound all thought inward to within its own domain. “Still, even if we do grow apart, I know that we’ll stay in touch. After all, if the outside world is as insane as Ohtori, I’ll definitely need the reprieve your voice brings to me.” Yes, that much she could be sure of.
“Well…” Miki’s voice definitely cracked. “I guess that’s good to know.” He suddenly turned around, making his way to the door. “I suppose that ‘we’ are still on for dinner on Thursday?”
“Of course. Miki, are you sure that there’s nothing wrong?” Looking at his back, there was so much tension there, so very unlike him.
“No, it’s just something I need to take care of on my own, it’ll be over soon enough.” Miki slammed the door shut behind him, and then Juri began to put the pieces together.
“Kozue?” Juri rushed forward and opened the door, but ‘Miki’, or Kozue disguised as Miki was already long gone.
