Last Weekend for August 24-26: BBQ & Brunch

Aug 29, 2018 22:58

I ate a lot this past weekend. I mean, I did other things too, but the food was the big thing.

M was in Columbus this weekend, but she didn't leave until Saturday morning. Friday night we hit up Deagan's for dinner, but didn't do much else.

On Saturday, my parents arrived from their newly purchased home near Pittsburgh. They were here partially to reclaim some of their possessions from my basement, but mostly because gieves and darlox have a big BBQ on the last Saturday of August, and my parents like both BBQ and them. The three of us had a pleasant evening hanging out with a great many people and eating lots and lots of food, notably the delicious pulled pork that came off the grill.

That evening I also learned that the first album my father owned was the Jay & the American greatest hits album featuring Come a Little Bit Closer. I learned this because some of the kids were watching Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and when that song memorably backs Yondu's escape Dad mentioned that anecdote. Also, Mom didn't want to leave until the movie was over because some she ended up watching it with a bunch of kids.

Sunday morning my parents and I met my aunt and cousin for brunch at Cafe Avalaun, which was just as good as it was when I first went there in July. I even had a coupon! From there they headed back to their new home, and I went to the radio station for a playlist that featured four different soul/R&B bands with "Black" at the start of their name.

That night I finished reading Railsea, which was my first experience with China Mieville. I really enjoyed the world that he created and would love to have a gaming campaign set there. With that said, I found the plot to be somewhat boring, although it did pick up toward the end. If you really like world building, it might be your thing.
