There is still no cure for the common birthday.

Spent most of my birthday weekend in bed, thanks to a head cold of gigantic proportions. Thankfully I had Monday off work too, so was able to stay in bed all morning then.

I managed lunch and breakfast the following day with my parents, sandwiching an evening visit to my grandmother, but got back home to Goring on Saturday evening and (finding the house not quite in the state I was expecting) burst into tears.

Still, one lives and learns:
- Never get smug about work, it just means your personal life will clash
- Never leave 2 men alone with a building project and expect to return 2 days later to find it a.) finished b.) only in the bits you'd specified and not off on a tangent c.) tidied up afterwards
- Never optimistically head home with birthday plans having left man alone to sort out detail
- Never forget to specify what you want as a present, or be prepared to accept randomness
- Always listen to your mother when she suggests that perhaps you are too poorly to travel and should go back to bed!
