The Pacific ocean. Water stretched for as far as the eye could see until it became one with the western horizon. A liquid continent, constantly moving. Here was the most powerful force on earth, magnificent in its beauty and terrible in its wrath.
The young man who was now Mister Smith stood on the beach and watched the waves, mesmerized by their undulation. The ocean filled his senses. The roar and hiss of the surf; the smell of the salty brine and something subtly fishy just beneath; cold spray on his face and arms.
And oh, how small he felt compared to the majesty of the sea! Like a single grain of sand.
Had he ever seen the ocean before? He couldn't remember. No matter how hard he tried to reach for the past, the child he was before the advent of the Big Death remained lost to him. Like looking for a picture drawn with a stick in the soft wet sand, only to see the last fading image washed away by the tide.
Had he ever played in the sand of a crowded beach, his parents watching from a blanket a short distance away? Had he ever built a sand castle or waded into the blue-green water to try and jump the waves?
He sighed, a soft sound caught by the cool ocean breeze and carried out to sea. His life before the Death - his past and all that he had been - was as distant and unreachable as the lands beyond the horizon. His memory was out there somewhere, solid and real, but equally invisible and unobtainable.
