In my own experience, to some extent the deities etc. who are interested are willing to whack one with a clue-bat. Often repeatedly.
And one's path has a lot to do with who chooses you- and who you choose in return, because it IS a 2-way street (or it can be, if one wants that; I've refused affiliations that did not respect my autonomy, for one; I don't DO worship, and I'm not willing to accept an alliance that requires such.)
Distance and respect is a perfectly appropriate attitude toward the gods. In fact, the more traditionally pagan I get, the more it seems that in general NOT attracting the attention of the gods is a Good Thing. :P I personally try to avoid it as much as possible, since it tends to lead to Drama.
Your natural allies will make themselves visible in time. But- they may well be NOT AT ALL what you're expecting; I know mine weren't. And you need to make some choices, too; I decided that I didn't do worship, and so respectfully declined affiliations that required such. Which meant that I'm left with ones that are a lot more complicated... but hey- that's what I asked for, gods help me. :P
