Fail @ Nippon
So there's been this silly alternative trend going around in this whole craze to try to look ridiculously asian. I don't blame people in regards to showing an interest in the crazy world of Japan, it's just amusing in regards to all the strange things that are just so much fun to do and just look cool, like Hello Kitty, sipping on bubble tea, watching Iron Chef and Pokemon episodes and getting crazy photo booth pictures. There is nothing really that much wrong with this, if anything I find it kind of amusing.
Although trying to claim massive 'kudos points' for being asian by just simply doing a few of the above is pretty much like claiming you're goth after buying black boots, bulk eyeliners and a Slipknot shirt out of Hot Topic. The whole trying to be asian thing is some what cute but often done with very little originality and is just far too overdone with barely any effort and is just simply becoming a silly trend.
If you really do believe in this further, then actually bother with some of these things which inspires my next top 10.
10. Bubble Tea
It's the pure drink of Asian-ness, it's the essential token drink of the wannabe asian. XP
9. Hello Kitty is Asian-ness
So you think that Japan is literally this happy, silly, Hello Kitty crazy country? Wrong. Hello Kitty has started and had it's main roots in Japan but the fashion is not really that popular over there at all. The company behind Hello Kitty is still very profitable because it makes most of it's money selling it's licenses to companies who sell outside of Japan.
8. Japanese Fashion
If you think that all there is to Japanese fashion is dressing up crazy, Hello Kitty and cosplaying you seriously have a lot to learn. The likes of Gyaru, Decora and all the various Lolita fashion are ones that definitely should be looked into, not necessarily to dress up into these difficult styles but to explore and take interesting notes of outside the culture.
7. Other Characters
Believe or not, Hello Kitty is not the be all and end all when it comes to cutesy Asian characters, there's Pucca, My Melody, Cinnamons, Blue Bear, Garu and so many that I could go forever with here..... It doesn't have to be Hello Kitty to be Asian, try Morning Glory or Freaks and Geeks to get a better idea.
6. Wai-Con
If you don't go here, you half fail at being Japanese, enough said. If you don't even know what Wai-Con is, you fully fail. XP
5. Japanese Gaming
You fail if you play Xbox, no Japanese people play or like Xbox. Nintendo and Sony are your friends of better yet the joys of playing at arcades. Mega bonus points for playing purely Japanese styled games like Okami, DDR and especially something like Katamari: Damacy which is simply the pure and true asian gaming experience.
4. Anime
Watching Pokemon or Dragonball Z won't cut it here, simply the number of people who claim to be so in love with Asian things and have barely watched an anime besides the n00bish shows on morning TV. My personal reccommendation is Elfen Lied but yes, so many wannabe asian n00bs who don't watch anime makes me sad. :(
3. Japanese Music
That silly Tokyo rap song so does not count. Look up some proper J-Pop, J-Trance, J-Rock, etc. Ayumi Hamasaki, Dir En Grey and the like are some good starters, finding some whack Japanese hardcore will do as well. XP
2. Planning a Trip to Japan
Seriously the number of people I know who are like, OMG, I so want to go to Japan. Most of these people do not have the foggiest of a clue about what they want to do when they go there, so many people are still OMG about wanting to go there and have never bothered to take an interest in trying to figure out what actually is in Japan and things to actually see and do. Massive kudos to those who've actually done it too btw!

Seriously, it doesn't matter how many of the above you claim to do, you fail, to be truly Asian, requires Asian parents and to be born in Asia, sorry, that makes most of you in Australia fail, sorry. XP (Yes, I half fail too)
