Anti-Alt

Unfortunately I lost the original uber post I was supposed to write but I'll do my best to re-write it.

Originally for a long time, I was going to get into the event promotion business by the goth/alt/cyber route, having had vast amounts of experience, not just at events but also behind the scenes and getting heavily involved in putting on events once upon a time. It would have been logical, Sin pulls in huge crowds and we'e got a massive scene here, although from my experience the worst thing you can do is to put on a goth event that isn't Sin.

I start to question what the scene really wants, on a really packed night at Sin, the dancefloor gets absolutely crowded when Chrome gets played, problem is that song has been so overplayed to death and yet we've seen gigs such as Aesthetic Perfection, The Birthday Massacre and Covenant play to pretty empty dance floors. It's bizarre to think that the fans who claim to want 'more bands' barely even show up or even get into the music.

All too often, I've seen interesting events go to waste, I've worked with some extremely awesome ideas, piercing performances, bondage acts, fashion parades and heck I've been involved with one epic goth event that was put on inside a church with some pretty creepy artwork which definitely boosted the atmosphere, unfortunately the whole place being abandoned may have helped the atmosphere too but wasn't the result anyone was looking for.

Models have been hard to find and search for in regards to those generally interested and more importantly models that are open enough to try various looks, excluding Missynthetic, I'm struggling to think of any others here in Perth. I've struggled with getting Hairlucination of the ground here and while I do think every now and then what I could have done to make it better, I've seen so many other local alt business' that struggle to get anywhere in Perth as many choose to stick to familiar labels, despite other interesting offerings many other local designers may have.

I got the gig to work for Miss Alternative in WA at the start of the year and in terms of interest, every major state saw many models scrap it out to even qualify, in comparison to WA where all you had to do was submit and entry to qualify. The event was barely received at all until miraculously every single alt business in Perth threw their weight behind the event at the last minute and the event attracted an enormous crowd. I've been left headscratching at all this, since from what I had gathered from many, many didn't care or show any interest till that night. The only thing I can really think off was the fact that Perth only finally caught on very, very late as usual.

I've had a few interesting ideas in mind, a revival and working around the Outbreed concept from earlier in the decade but with what I've seen in the alt scene, there's no point in Perth, this isn't Adelaide or Melbourne where we see wonderful, interesting and unique ideas for events that work. Perth has for so long seen itself settling into settling into the same events, I mean the more effort you put into events, the more you'll fail, now where is the fun in that?

Enter Neko Nation, a huge backflip on everything I had worked up to years to prepare for since this is a scene that encourages and accepts creativity, doesn't bitch and moan about not going because so and so is there and a chance to try something new without being shunned for trying...
