Indian Sweet & Sour Chicken

Is it authentic Indian?
I have NO IDEA.

It *is* authentic circa 1970's rediscovery of cultural food and flavor more complex than salt and pepper.

Derek feels deep in his soul that it is "British Indian", which is as accurate a statement as any other theory. :)

This is from a cookbook that my mom has, and will eventually have to be scanned for future use.

Indian Sweet & Sour Chicken

1 large pack of chicken thighs
2 large onions
3 cloves garlic
2T chopped ginger
2T sugar
1T paprika
1T turmeric
1t coriander
1/4t cardamom
1/4t black pepper
1/4t cayenne
1/3c red wine vinegar
14oz chicken broth
2t sesame seeds

- remove skin from chicken thighs, and then dredge in flour and brown in a large pot
- add onions, garlic, ginger, and spices.
- add vinegar and broth
- bring everything to a boil and then down to a simmer for an hour, or until the chicken is tender and falling off the bone.
- garnish with sesame seeds

The result is a mild but flavorful yellow curry that goes well over rice, an excellent gateway recipe for people who are leery of how spicy Indian cuisine can get.

This can be done easily in a crock pot by assembling all of the items at once and letting it cook for an extended period of time.

Next time I make this, I plan to increase the cayenne as it wasn't quite as zippy as I would have liked. As it was, it was still delicious, and reminded me of cooking with mom when I was a kid.
