I undertook my first adventure into pie-making this morning: Thanksgiving pumpkin pie! I wasn't brave enough to try and make my own pie crust, but I did tackle the filling. A FB friend suggested I crank up some groovy tunes to bake to, but I opted to bake in silence. I wanted to enjoy the experience, to be in the moment and focus on it for what it was. I really enjoyed it. Now my whole house smells like pumpkin pie!
I've been making baby steps into the world of cooking since the dissertation wrapped up. I've never had a particularly intimate relationship with food--it's traditionally been something to eat and be done with--but I thought I'd try a little more cooking here and there as a way to better control my diet. My treat to myself for finishing my dissertation was to buy myself a new wok for cooking veggies and stir fry. I'm looking forward to more such adventures.
Today will be a big one. Jackson and I are having our Thanksgiving dinner together. We're doing things a little unconventionally because he gets a more traditional dinner tomorrow with his mother. So, for instance, instead of mashed potatoes, he wanted rice (still wants gravy for it, though!). We'll have broccoli instead of green beans. I'll make myself a sweet potato. The biggest change, though, is that he picked rotisserie chicken instead of turkey--a switch I was thankful for because there are fewer things in the world I dislike more than leftover turkey. I get to "cheat" a bit and buy the chicken--hey, I said baby steps!--and we'll be good to go. There will be much to be thankful for today.
