Reverie, C&I Poem of the Week

Jan 30, 2013 10:28

Mornin', eveyone.

This is the Cowboys & Indians Magazine poem of the week.  I can see Jack sitting in his office, looking out at tarmac and tractors and balers, and thinking of Ennis and the "sweet life" he wished for but couldn't have.

Thanks again.

Bud

Reverie
By Marilyn Brammer

It hasn't been all that long
Since I've had that scent on me
Since I've breathed it in
That way that life used to be

The sweet scent of dust and sweat
Old leather and tall fields
It hasn't been all that long since I've tasted it
At least not as long as it feels

But I've traveled so far from it
And my work keeps me away
From being covered in horse hair
And bucking large bails of hay

Of the long days of a good tired,
watching calves and walking fence lines
It's not something easily lost or forgotten,
but around here, hard to find

Being a cowboy is in our veins
And isn't something that just ends
It doesn't stop or weather or fade
But follows wherever we lay our head

It follows me and I dream of it with a sigh
Forever wishing to return to tall fields
Beneath a clear blue sky
