My first instinct is soccer ball! Using the patches from it should give you an idea of how to start breaking down the shape. :)

If you're a DnD geek, the d12 is a good ball shape. And has fewer pieces than a soccer ball, though on pretty much the same principle. See also Dodecahedron.

I agree! I'd say buy yourself a d12 as a mini-model. Cheaper than a football, too :]

have you ever tried needle felting (or even traditional wet felting)?

I think that they used less than 12 hexagons, it looks like ten. it looks like they stuffed each circle too!
This is so cool, I want to make one for my friend now!!!!!!!!!

I'm used to seeing plush "balls" made with rounded-diamond shapes, not pentagons :< But a ball plush made in that fashion wouldn't Katamari out as easily. I guess :x
