(I just lost my entire post!!)
I'm down with a cold that I'm trying to keep on the down low, as it's just easier with my family. So, I'm blaming that for missing Australia's last game, and well, the other historical event that went down. I kept getting woken up throughout the night/morning (I got up finally at ~2.30pm), and getting updated by twitter of the various going ons, I'm interpreting these little "alarm clocks" as trying to notify me of the historical occasions.
So, while I was sleeping:
- Australia beat Serbia, but exited the World Cup (not exactly a surprise to me as I was unfortunately being a horrible realist)
- Australia got its first female prime minister (no comment since everyone seems to not like her, I don't pay attention to politics >.> but yay females?)
I know most of you have already done your "zomg! World Cup! It's been four years?!" posts already, but I'm late to wake up, so here's mine.
Things that haven't changed:
- my love for you guys! (I met most of you four years ago. Four years! I'm really still wrapping my head around this!!)
- I'm still a Portugal supporter?
The first ever football game I watched was Portugal - England, and wanting to go for the "underdog" I started going for Portugal. Yes, it was that game with Ronaldo - Rooney, yet I somehow fell for C.Ronaldo in it. He reminded me of an awkward, funny running giraffe... Don't ask.
This time around, I felt as if I was watching with no real loyalties. Yes, I'm Australian, and yes, by default I was supporting our boys, but I cannot say that I'm a diehard fan. It would be an insult to those who faithfully support them. D is going for South Korea (or well, both Koreas) because of a "deal" with his whitewashed Korean friend who said he'd give D his computer if Korea wins the WC. I really doubt he'd go through with it and already warned D of their chances... but hey, all in the name of fun, right?
Then I caught the last 30 minutes of Portugal - North Korea. D informs me that he's going for Korea because the deal applies to any Korea. Within the minute of my switching on there's a goal. Definitely not looking good for D. Then I forget absolutely everything and find myself supporting/happy/amazed by the boys. I feel myself missing my familiarity. I miss Nuno Gomez! I recount to D how moved I was by Ricardo's display in the dying minutes against the French in '06. I'm reminiscing about the old times! Then I realise that there are some things that don't change, and some things that have that I really don't miss.
I don't miss my infatuation with C.Ronaldo. I also don't miss his diving or him being a ball hog. I was so impressed with his assisting! I know, I really shouldn't be impressed as that's what should normally be done, but marvelling over how much has changed. I don't know, it's silly, but yes, I've realised what hasn't changed. Apparently I'm still a Portugal supporter.
