Welcome to my world!

Nr 4 : Well that one is easy, forward the spam with a note about violation of policy to that users boss and/or his bosses boss and hey presto!

Usually works best if rules are really enforced.

Well, when the Spam came in I showed a print-out of the email to my boss, and when we'd agreed it was a violation of our policy, he asked me if I wanted to phone the user and give her a warning. I thought "With pleasure!" but then he changed his mind and said he'd contact her himself. Oh well.

My nickname in the office is now "The Spam Sherriff!" Hehe, I'm the Hot Fuzz of the IT World! Sergeant Nicholas Angel better watch out! ;-)

I can agree with the stupidity. Of course, I'm not IT, I've worked cusstomer service (and yes, there are two s' on cusstomer) but, more to the point, I've been helping DH with his computer.

Why I ever decided to drag him into the 20th century...should have left him alone with his tv, remote and cat.

I can sympathize... also, when I worked at Dell, customers there would frequently ask if I could connect to their home computers. First of all, no, there was no way for me to connect to anyone's computer, ever.

Second of all, they would only ask this if they were having trouble getting on the Internet.

Pray tell, how on earth could I possibly connect to their home computer if they didn't even have an Internet connection?

Some wanted me to connect to their computers in order to turn their computers on and perform the INITIAL SETUP OF WINDOWS! Ha. No, just, no.

But, but, but! Didn't you know computers are magic? And by the rules of magic, if you're a powerful enough wizard, you can do ANYTHING!. So it's not their fault you're not good enough at all this IT stuff to be able to do the impossible!

Indeed, it is truly staggering what feats the public thinks a $9-an-hour tech is capable of. :)

Can you count to 9? or maybe 25? Or just "9" or "more than 9" will do arkaycee June 26 2007, 01:54:43 UTC
3. Sometimes people phone up because they don't know how to do something ridiculously simple, like switch on their PC. These people always claim they are "not IT literate"! Since when did you need an honours degree in Computer Science to know how to press a power switch? I reckon people are using the "not IT literate" excuse because they're too bloody lazy to actually learn how to do things!

Some people hear "Computer" and it makes them think everything about it is all compil-cated 'n' shite ( ... )

This was back in the day where there were 25-pin serial ports and 9-pin serial ports

I remember those days well! My dad's first computer (not a PC) had a Serial interface and a really sloow daisy-wheel printer - that thing sounded like a machine gun!

And then of course there were the LPT ports.... ;-)
