Ms. Zandt takes a sip of her latte and triumphantly finishes marking the last of the vocabulary quizzes she brought with her. She caps her red pen and sits back in her chair for a moment before leaning forward to slide the papers and pen into her bag.
She rubs her forehead, telling herself that it's too early in the day to develop a migraine. Considering a pastry, she looks towards the front counter and sees Ms. Juspeczyk holding a cup of coffee and a tasty-looking scone. She smiles and waves her hand in recognition, then gestures toward the empty seat at her table invitingly.
"Hello, Laurie. [conversationally:] I just graded the quiz of a student who believes 'degenerate' means 'the child of'. She also believes that 'compunction' is a type of punctuation. I am beginning to regret my suggestion that Latin students could rely on cognates to guide them if they didn't know the meaning of a word. How has your day been going?"
