1) Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2) Make a post and talk about the icons I chose.
3) Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4) This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee.
chickenfeet2003 asked me about
these icons:
River Tam from Firefly, with the line she delivers while looking at a stick that's actually a gun. Made by me (all my icons are made by me...). I generally use it for cryptic posts that are about more than they appear.
Prof. Hubert J. Farnsworth from Futurama, with one of his patented exclamations. Used to express surprise and amazement, in a rather silly way. Mostly, I just like saying it ;)
Garth Marenghi (aka Matthew Holness), star and auteur of 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace', expressing his views on writing sex scenes. Generally good advice, although I will cop to using the word 'balls' from time to time, as the least awful choice of the available options. I don't think I've actually used this icon since I put it into the rotation, but it's intended for talking about writing sex, and possibly discussing bad sex scenes.
Julian Barratt as the Padre from Darkplace, delivering some heartfelt words at a funeral. Included mainly because it cracks me up, which probably means it won't last too long in the rotation. I could use it for posts about religion, I guess, if I made many!
Janet from Rocky Horror, expressing shock and horror at the appearance of Dr. Frank-n-furter. Used for, well, expressing shock and horror, though again, not very seriously.
Frak: It's The New Gorram. Frak is the expletive of choice on the new Battlestar Galactica. Gorram was one of the expletives of choice on Firefly. I'm amused by made-up swear words as a way of getting around censorship, especially when they start to be used in real life - which would seem to subvert the purpose, really.
bodhifox asked me about
these icons:
Morbo, the alien newscaster from Futurama. He generally refers to himself in the third person, and is belligerent. Here, he demands comments on a given post, with implied threats of violence should the comments not be forthcoming :)
Saffron from Firefly, a most untrustworthy woman, juxtaposed with a quote from Jayne about women in general. I use this icons for posts about misogyny, and used to use it for feminist issues in general, before I devoted an Eowyn icon to the more positive side of the issue.
A quote from the Stan Rogers song "Song of the Candle", one of my favourites of his, and indeed, in general.
Lyrics here. It's a song about writer's block, sort of, and the line in question makes me think about what I'm trying to do with my writing - and, I suppose, with my life in general. I'd be happy to have raised some smiles before I walk away.
Cordelia says this, I forget in which of the Vorkosigan books, but I think it's pretty apt. I use it for posts about motherhood, and to remind myself that a) motherhood is damn hard, and b) I've been successful at lots of things in my life that are pretty damn hard.
I have no idea who came up with this line, or what it might be from originally, but it's something I've been known to say when things rock so much you need two hands to throw the horns ;)
A snippet from the Pre-Raphaelite painting
Convent Thoughts, by Charles Allston Collins. Mostly, I think the nun looks bored as hell with her contemplation of Christ's Passion or whatever it is, so I stuck some snarky text on it and use it for posts that are probably boring ;)
owldaughter asked me about
these icons:
The bride, from the scene in Kill Bill 1 when she's stepping out of the chapel and sees Bill standing there. It's a moment of peace in a very violent movie, and I used it for contemplative sorts of posts.
Neville from the Gashlycrumb Tinies! I love Neville, the tiny head poking over the window's edge, and the very idea of dying of ennui amidst all the other horrible deaths in that book ;) I use it for those days when I feel like Neville.
Cally, from the new BSG. She's a deckhand who only joined up to pay for dental school (hee) but she grows from a nameless character at the start of the show into a relatively important one - possibly very important, given the ending of the third season... I like the look on her face here, sort of a mild skepticism or something like that. Mostly this icon gets used for posts I make to the BSG icon community I help moderate,
bstg_icontest.
The bots from MST3K, trying to imagine what it would be like to be dead. Used for those moments where something has killed me with laughter :)
Joan of Arc (well, Joan of Arc's clone) from Clone High. I love Joan, she's so great. And here's she's doing the manic, wild-eyed crazy thing (that is so different from her usual personality ;) I use it for general wackiness.
AHAhahah, one of my very favourite icons. Refers to A Song of Ice and Fire, a big fat fantasy series by George R. R. Martin. And, well, it's true! There is incest, and canonical gayitude, both m/m and f/f, in the books. It's sort of a double-edged icon, too, in that the mainstream ASOIAF fandom is pretty rabidly anti-fanfic, and then there are we valiant (*snerk*) few who write the damn stuff nevertheless. It's perhaps slight consolation that most things I can come up with are no more twisted than what's already in the books themselves ;)
Terry Pratchett quote on education, very apropos. I use it for things about grad school, mainly, or when I feel like educating someone ;)
