What color is your hair now, and what is your natural color? Has it been previously dyed or otherwise treated with chemicals (straightened, highlighted, etc.), and is there any remaining color/chemical left on your hair? What is your skin coloring, are you cool- or warm-toned? The reason I ask is because black dye can look very harsh on some skintones, and if you use a dye on hair that has already been chemically processed the color can "grab" at those areas (because of porosity) and look dull and drab (and further dry your hair ( ... )

wow that was a lot of information, tahank you very much.
well i have more of warm toned skin but i've always seemed to be somwhere in-between---not waaarm but not really cool either..i'm about NW25ish (MAC). my natural hair is dark dark olive brown my hair has been dyed a reddish color that has faded so it's not really brown or red. i'll definitely look into the garnier line though
thank you for all the information, really!

I think I'd recommend the lighter of the two shades, the # 40. =)

i'm afraid i don't have any specific brand to recommend but make sure you don't use permanent dye!

you might want to check out a natural dye, like at whole foods which contains no ammonia. I am pretty sure some of those are permanent which would be fine, and less damaging without the ammonia and other bad chemicals.

I wanted to go black from a red color I had, and was scared to go permenant, so I used clairol nice and easy. Its semi permenant, with a think low or no ammonia. They have a few diferent shades of black. There is a "soft black" which it supposed to look more dull, and like really black or dark brown hair. Thats what I used. They have natural black, which is a little more shiny and true black. They also have a blue black, if you really want to change it up. I never lioked they way blue black looked but some people love it. I like nice and easy because it would fade a little, just enough so my dark brown hair growing out, would not look so obvious. It doesnt completely wash out though like it says. Seriously, once I went black, I have never gone back to anything else.

do NOT use permanent dye! i dyed my hair black in january and it is a nightmare to get rid of.. i dont even know where to begin. my hair is naturally dark brown so i thought it'd be no big deal growing it out but it looks so awkward... i get lots of squinty eyed "why is your hair two different colors?" and "did you dye part of your hair?" questions from strangers. black hair is awesome though, just definately go with a semi permanent
