On the Jacobite.

The train journey from Mallaig to Fort William is regarded as one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. I have done it before, just on the ordinary train, and it really is a great trip. For many years it has been one of the few parts of the main-line network that had a regular steam hauled train in the summer - known as The Jacobite.

And then, the locations team for the 1st Harry Potter film found it... and the steam-hauled train and the part of the line that crosses the Glenfinnan viaduct are now know to many people as the Hogwarts' express/line.

But, as I knew it before it became known that way, I will continue to be thrilled that we travelled on The Jacobite.

Here are some pictures of the scenery en route.

The earliest part of the journey is along the coast, but with so much greenery along the trackside that there was no point in trying to take pictures.

These were taken as we travelled into the mountains;

And this is as you approach the famous Glenfinnan viaduct.

If you look closely you might make out a tall column slightly left of centre, down by the side of the loch. This is the Glenfinnan monument, a tribute to those who died fighting for the Jacobite cause.

Then comes the famous moment when the train crosses THAT viaduct. It occurred to me, just in time, that I could make a short video of it - it is not brilliant, but I have uploaded it to YouTube and it is here

And a couple more pictures taken towards the end of the train ride -

Finishing with our engine;

And a happy husband;
