Does anyone else remember a childhood hymn that began 'Fair waved the golden corn, in Caanan's pleasant land'? Firstly, as there was a farm in the village where so many of my relatives lived called 'Caanan', I always assumed, as a child, that it was about the harvest in fields just behind my Auntie Phyllis's house.
But, secondly, every time I look out the window at the garden, both front and back, I am reminded of it. We haven't cut the grass for six weeks now and it is a good foot or more high, waving in the gentle breeze, and golden with coltsfoot and buttercups. It is now beyond the capabilities of our small lawn mower, and it really does need cutting!
Josh, the gardener, has been going to come and put a new edging around the area where the shed used to be, and cut the grass, for the past three weeks... But his van was out of action, then a morning job down south became an all day job as his usual 'helper when needed' was sick. He was due to come today - but another of his regulars had a tree come down, damaging the house, and he was going to help make it safe, and didn't get done until late afternoon...
Now he promises to be here on Friday morning...
The result is that, from the house windows, I can't see quite a bit of the new planting out the back - although I can enjoy it when I sit out there. So, no area pictures - rather there are some individual flower ones
One of the buttercups which have enjoyed the long grass -
And here is one of the hardest working plants - the scabious have been flowering beautifully since late March and show no sign of stopping just yet. There are four of them dotted around, this is the palest -
One of the allium seedheads -
The first flower on the Iceberg rose we planted about 5 years ago -
The red roses outside the kitchen window are just beginning to flower, too. As is Queen of Sweden who was moved from a rather dark spot at the back, near the holly, to a place in the same bed as the red ones. She has clearly not suffered from the move.
Any idea what these are? They flower as large discs of these tiny flowers. I really should have taken a picture of the whole plant!
I'm not sure what this one is, either. It is not using the trellis, it just happens to be in front of it.
I have pansies in a couple of pots, doing really well -
And, finally...
pondhopper -I have a bottle brush plant!! This is the first flower, it appeared a couple of days ago -
Actually - going back to the grass, a couple of days ago a gentleman, who looked a good 10 years older than us, knocked on the door then opened it and called a loud 'hello!'. We both went to the door and had no idea who he was. He looked a bit surprised, then asked us if we knew where number 29 was (we live in 27).
As I pointed it out, it became apparent that he had been asked to cut the grass for 'the very old lady' who lives there - but seemed to have seen our grass (a lot longer than that at number 29!) and assumed this was the house 😁
