Budding Photographer!

On Friday the Nice Young Kids spent the day at our house. The plan had been to spend at least part of the day visiting their 'adopted' donkey at the Home of Rest for Old Horses, but the weather was grey with rain showers most of the day.

Charlotte (NYK2) happily painted and did a lot of things involving glitter and glue on the kitchen table, Seb (NYK1) and I made Nutella brownies for later, he spent ages discussing aircraft with S2C and playing on his DS. We made cheese sandwiches for lunch, and both decided that cheddar with chillies was much better than any plain cheese :)

Then NYK1 said it was a shame D-d gave all her Lego away when she went to uni, did we have any model type things...?

Remember that S2C was a war gamer, and a tabletop gamer for many years, and was a collector and painter of figures?

The next hour or two was spent making a tabletop safari park;

NYK2 spent quite a while (and more concentration than usual) getting to grips with knitting. We sat in the conservatory to do that, and could see the weather improving by about 3.30. Too late to go to visit the donkeys as they close at 4pm. But she began to realise that the conservatory gives a good view of the bird feeders and of insects visiting the flowers.

Enter NYK1. He is fascinated by animals, programmes on TV about vets, and so on. "I wish I could try taking pictures of the bees."

So I gave him my camera and out he went. Here are a few of his pictures;

(You can just see the pale patches where it had gathered a lot of pollen.)

Then butterflies began to appear -

This one seemed to be drying it's wings. The wings looked very tatty, as if something had almost caught it earlier -

Earlier in the week I had seen a Woodland Brown in the garden, but not on Friday.

Then the birds reappeared as the place dried out. The sparrows are fun to watch, but impossible to photograph from outdoors as they take off the minute there is anyone in the garden. But the collared doves are less flighty -

And this is the favourite of both Seb and I!

Finally he moved indoors and decided to take a picture of Willow (who had been much loved all day by NYK2, but was very good about it). I really love this;

And we really must go to visit the donkeys some day during the school holidays.
