I made this as a last-minute treat, and I'm so pleased with how it turned out.
I loved the character of Val in the Solo movie and thought the way her arc ended was stupid and a waste of potential.
But even though it was a waste, there were still things I loved. Val's attitude and charm is so like Han's! And I loved the way her hand keeps playing out in the plot of the movie long after her on-screen death -- much more so than the actual hands of cards that are literally played by Han and Lando. If the writing had been just a bit cleverer, Val's death could have worked so well, rather than just being a fridging. The thing is, she dies in a way that's very reminiscent of Han's death, so the parallels could have been, should have been overtly between her and Han, and her legacy throughout the film should have been a silent presence, a deep lesson for Han about love and courage and why he shies away from them for so long. Val's legacy could have continued to play out as an echo in our minds in hindsight even up to Han's own cinematic death. That's how it should have gone, but of course the writing wasn't that clever, despite the potential. I suspect in some earlier draft of the script there was a more overt parallel between Val's death and Han's, but somewhere along the way it turned into a limp, sexist mess. Disappointing.
Anyway, I've done what I can here to correct that. Given Val's end in the film, I wanted to explore the idea of how our actions keep having consequences even after death. I wanted to capture my love for her, and show a bit of what a story about her might have looked like, and I think I managed that with this vid, even though she's not in all that many scenes of the movie.
