The vagaries of fannish desire

Mar 22, 2010 23:03

Work has been really busy for about the last seven weeks, to the point that I haven't really had much mental energy for thinking about my own creative work, either non-fannish or fannish.

That's meant I've been reading as a way of winding down, and specifically looking for lightweight, fluffy stories with a bit of plot and a happy ending. Ironically, my desire for this kind of reading has just happened to coincide with Torchwood fanfic both decreasing in quantity and also not very often being written in my favourite genres. (Honestly, I do get why Children of Earth has killed off pretty much everything but: 1) retro fics, 2) denial and curtain fic, 3) angsty mourning fics, 4) future fics about Jack, 5) fixits, and 6) the long wips that were started before CoE. I get it, I do, but most of those genres do nothing for me. Maybe we need a wake or something; a moving-on party. I dunno. But I'm craving something fresh, and I'm not finding it.)

So I've been looking elsewhere and flirting with other fandoms. I do that periodically anyway -- I tend to have a main squeeze (usually the fandom I'm writing in), and then a few flirtations on the side.

While Torchwood is still my main squeeze, I'm currently flirting with (in order of preference):

  • Supernatural, Dean/Castiel
(OMG, why? I've never seen the show, and I don't want to. I can tell from the fic that it's not something I'd even enjoy! (Actually, I know why -- falling angels are interesting. Pls to be writing more Nephilim. Also, you should totally tell me where the classics and recs are. *nods*))

  • Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock
(So much kidfic! Also, pon farr fic! This fandom would actually be higher in my preferences, but sadly, most of the pon farr fic isn't doing anything new, and I get this strong sense of deja vu for the TOS Kirk/Spock pon farr fics I read back in the day. Honestly, there's only so many times I can read exactly the same story without any noticable variation. It doesn't have to be all that fresh, as I do love this trope a lot. Is it really so hard to come up with something slightly newish? Really????)

  • Stargate: Atlantis, McKay/Sheppard
(*squishes SGA* Seriously, this fandom is still remarkably awesome considering so many people have deserted the ship. Even the meta is still great. Just today there was fantastic meta by Mecurtin on San Francisco Bay and where the city might be landed and moored. Sometimes I wish I hadn't fallen out of love with SGA. I want another fandom like it.)

  • Sherlock Holmes, Holmes/Watson/Mary
(This would be number one, if only there were more than a handful of stories with this threesome. *sadface* The handful are awesome though, so there's that.)

  • Merlin, Merlin/Arthur
(Look, I want to still like Merlin fic, but it's gone off the boil. I keep clicking and then closing the tab half-way through. Is that what you've been finding too?)

So what are your latest fanworks squeezes? And who are your favourite authors/reccers?

I'm willing to expand my horizons, people. Tell me what's happening in your neck of the woods?
