I know Castiel and the Dean/Cas fandom have been torn up between rage and disappointment for days now and some have been more emotional than most. This! :( This was shown in the last 3 episodes, and in my eyes this limitation of Dean's has sunk the Dean/Cas ship. If Dean can put his actions where his mouth is and learn to also love Castiel unconditionally in S7, then OK - otherwise, "family" will only mean "Sam" and that's incredibly restrictive and claustrophobic, when one considers how many enriching and fulfilling relationships we forge with people in our lives...
My biggest problem with the OOC mess the writers have made of Castiel in the finale is that they tried to force a square peg through a round hole, to use a pre-existing character in a role that DIDN'T FIT him. Castiel has always loved Dean unconditionally (he saw him at his worst in Hell), and never required his love to be returned. He didn't NEED his love to be returned. So, Castiel as a toddler throwing a tantrum "you'll love me, or else" in the final scene didn't work because it's simply not him! Castiel never yearned for Dean to reciprocate his love - he yearned for Dean's friendship and happiness, and only left him (twice, in 5x03 and 5x22) when Dean assured him he was happy or he was going to be OK. He didn't visit Dean once during the year Dean lived with Lisa and Ben because the knowledge of Dean's happiness was enough to fulfill Castiel. And in the finale, we saw him making a 180 degrees turn right from the start of the episode, to have his entire personality turning upside down! o_O
