My head!canon (I have too much head canon) is that those suit jackets/jackets/blazers they wear are their wings, wrapped around their body like second skin while in a human vessel. And for those who could see, when the wings unravel in that split second before they leave the vessel and be in their true form, this is what they see. The metaphysical coat becomes wings before the coat is just another coat, as far as the human eye and mind can comprehend.
Mainly inspired by Good Omens, particularly during that moment when Aziraphale and Crowley were about to attack and their coat tails ripped in half and transformed into wings.
Coupled with that one interview I’ve read somewhere where Misha jokingly said that Cas believes his wings to be ugly, while Kripke also commented that the reason he always wears a coat is because the wings might be ugly.
