I was looking over my recent entries and discovered two that hadn't been posted. First, from (I think) May 19:
Yesterday we received shocking news. Victor, a guy who's worked in this building for more than 30 years, died suddenly from a heart attack on Sunday. I've known him the 25+ years we've lived here. On Friday we had a nice chat. Everyone in the building is in shock, not least the other guys who work here. His brother and daughters were here talking with our super, Carlos. Last night, at the 7 PM daily time where everyone bangs pots and pans, honks horns, etc. I said to Jeff that I wanted to go down there to be with the other tenants.
No one was there, not even the regulars. The whole building (175 apartments) is in mourning. Someone put up white posterboard with pictures of him, and we've been writing RIP notes. It's heartbreaking. The other day Jeff learned of a friend who died of covid. He hadn't seen him in a few years. But still, it's the first immediate friend or family member we've lost. It's so fucking sad.
On the brighter side, I spent part of Saturday and Sunday evening helping out my friend
brainwane , who is making videos for the
wiscon auction, which she hosts annually. I did a video where she's talking to me, but it shifts to black and white and I'm an old movie star. (Doing the worst impressions of Mae West and Marlene Dietrich you've ever heard.) She's a very funny writer and it looks good. When I first took test shots of myself I freaked out ZOMG I'm so fucking OLD when did that all happen to my face I look like Alfred Hitchcock
Second, from May 23:
Last night we had the most beautiful wake for Victor, known to most by his last name, Bruno. Dozens of us came down at 7 pm. One of the guys set out candles that spelled Bruno's last name and another tenant handed everyone white balloons on which we wrote messages. Bruno's teenage daughters were there. We were all wearing masks.
The 7 pm cheer usually only lasts about 4 minutes, but we clapped and cheered for at least 10 minutes, because we were cheering for our guy. There were airhorns and rattles. I knew him for decades. We all had masks on, and a lot of us were crying. When we were finished, our super gave a countdown and we released the balloons. Some of the staff didn't come because they were too broken-hearted. Then people lit the candles and played salsa music. There was champagne and homemade cookies.
The
wiscon auction video was a hit!
brainwane is an astonishing woman. She made a bunch of very funny videos which ran throughout the auction and the whole thing was a lot of fun. I went on the Discord and chatted with a server about Dreamwidth and a number of other subjects.
