Anti baseball bat rally at 1PM

So, here we go again...

I remember last summer making an entry regarding Chicago Public Schools and all the shootings.  You can refer to said rant here: http://cubbies76.livejournal.com/2007/05/15/

Well...let's go to the tote board....23!!  23 students from CPS have been killed so far this school year.  Looks like all those marches are workin...oh wait...umm...oops.

In the last couple of weeks, we had the shooting at Simeon...aaaaand another march (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-simeon-shooting-webapr01,1,4255642.story?track=rss)

A few days ago, we had the teen killed by a baseball bat after a fight broke out after a party  http://www.suntimes.com/news/24-7/882859,CST-NWS-shoot08.article
Should we start planning an anti-baseball bat rally now???

Ooo, today's article... (3 teens injured in separate shootings)

Sorry, the article does not say when the marches will be yet.

The situation I discussed in last year's rant involved a student from Julian, Blair Holt.  The Sun-Times today did an interview with Blair's mom.

She has stern words for parents of offenders. "It all is in the hands of the parents. It's something the
teachers can't do, the police can't do. It's up to the parents to raise their children. We got children out here
being raised by gangs, being raised by TV, and violent video games that show carjackings."

"Parents need to be held accountable..."

I've been teaching at the Markham Court House for over 7 years now running a program for juvenile offenders who have been kicked out of school.  Have I seen a change in students?  Yes...sadly, but mostly for the worse.  In a discussion last week over the lastest shootings, when asked who was at fault, one response was, "It's the kid's faults for gettin shot...they too dumb to get out 'da way."

Seriously...that's what one kid said and several others nodded and agreed.  I've started looking for a new job because I am done fighting with parents who teach their children that retaliation is a viable option. I am done fighting with the rappers who have taught my students that police officers are evil and those who cooperate with them are snitches and should be killed.  I'm done dealing with people who actually get into fights over what someone says or because someone looked at them funny.

Like I said in my previous rant, stricter gun laws will do nothing to curb this type of violence. Increased police presence can only help for so long...until they find a way around it. Whatever...good luck with your marches, and keep the tote board updated.
