(PS- this entry may ramble, but i wanted to write it, so dont mind me...)
So, i woke up at 11...geez...kinda late, but im on spring break...whatever. Poured a large bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats (now with strawberries - YEA!) with the last bit of milk - had to get breakfest in before noon! Worked on the paper i have to write for a scholarship alittle("To strengthen educational standardas and improve academic achievement, should high school students be required to pass a standardized test, like the FCAT, to receive a high school diploma?" <-- any thoughts, opinions, reactions?)
It was a gorgeous day out today - upper eighties, nice breeze - it was calling my name! I decided to get ready and hit the town for the day. Did some shopping at Metro Center, and then decided to walk and discover what was out there. I highly recommend this to anyone.
One day just go out alone and walk wherever the "walk" signs lead you. When you come to a corner, which ever direction is telling you to "walk", WALK! Go with the flow! I started to walk at about 4:00. I walked by a Starbucks, picked up a Carmal Frap and thought Id traverse till it was finished (because in DC it is like a FEDERAL crime to enter a metro station with food or drink!). I walked by the Nat'l Archives and through the National Navy Memorial. It was actually a really cool place, but you might not see it at first. It is like a big circular sidewalk, partially enclosed with fountains. The walkway is covered in two tones or granite that form a globe. I didnt see it at first, but when I stepped back for a sec, it popped out at me. I walked around the world today - Africa, Mexico, even Pinellas County FL! See I did get home for Spring Break - and who knew that I was only three strides from home! I continued my walk up Pennsylvania Ave toward the captial building. I saw the soon-to-be sight for the Newseum (journalism museum), and out front they display the front pages from newspapers across the nation and globe. It was so awesome to see all the differences in layout and choices of pictures and headlines. I must say, i was not impressed with London's page...it was just ackward and strange...but hey, theyre British!
It was about 5:00 by now, and I really enjoyed walking amongst the important people in their expensive suits with all their "people" on their way to after-wrok festivities. Only in DC do people discuss polling stats for fun when work gets OUT! As I approached the West Lawn, buses were being loaded with high school students who attended Close Up...Seminole high did that! I couldnt help but hope to see someone I knew from school...i didnt, but the thought was there.
Let me tell you, looking down the Lawn from the back steps of the Capital at sunset - comforting sight! The goofy sea gulls dove and swooped over head, the cars honked on their way throught the cross streets in the Mall, and the sun painted the sky orange behind the Washingotn monument. Ahhh...It wasnt the beach seen I am used to but, but change is good. I would usually go to Union from there, but I thought i go right instead of left. I walke toward the Rayburn building of the Representatives' offices. I could see Bill Youngs office from the street. His window peers right over the street below and stares at the south side of the Captial. I want that office some day...
As i continued down the street, a saw a group of four Girl Scouts, only a little younger than me, all dressed up in their uniform. It made me think...i made the same trip only 4 1/2 years ago. It was the trip that led me to love this city and want to live up here. Im so glad they had this experience. One depressing aspect of this trip was the very large 12 foot baracade/construction wall put up around the front of the CAptial. You used to be able to walk ont eh steps...now about a 1/4 mile blockade keeps you away. *tear*
I continued to walk around the Capital, passed the Library of Congress and the Supreme Crt Building, and walked to Union Station. I grabbed some bagles from Au Bon Pain (50% off between 4-6! yes - cheap breakfest!) Made it back to my room and decided it would be a lovely night to run to the Shrine. I huffed up the steps after my jog over and sat atop on the marble pillers. I sat at the steps and peered over the city streets below. A stronger breeze hit me up there, and even though it was cooler than before, i wasnt cold.
No matter what goes wrong in life, I will still have today.
