From a Distance
He watched him from the shadows, nobody knew of this obsession. Watched as Cedric dropped his name into the Goblet. Saw that moment of indecision in his eyes as his hand hovered over the edge of the Goblet, still clutching that piece of parchment within his fingertips. Indecision changing into determination as he heard a soft voice behind him. From the darkness, his gaze hardened as he saw a small, slim girl come up behind Cedric. Her blue and bronze scarf a stark contrast to her long, dark hair.
The entire school looked on as the Four Champions opened the Yule Ball. Cedric was dancing with the Ravenclaw girl, she was the reason they were both there. If it wasn't for her encouragement almost two months ago, he wouldn't have come to the attention of the school. Even he beat Cedric at Quidditch last year. It hurt to see the disappointment on such a beautiful face.
They all watched anxiously as the two Hogwarts champions were the first to enter the maze of the third task. Nobody knew that only one would come back out alive. Soon, all four champions were in the maze. Jokes and jibes were tossed around about the chances of each champion's survival. When the screams of 'He's dead! Cedric Diggory! Dead!' reached him, he stayed quiet. None of the figures around him appeared to react, it wasn't one of their own. Others, further, in the stands were starting to rise from their seats. A buzzing sound in his ears, whispers and murmurs racing through the crowd. People bursting into tears, screaming. The Ravenclaw girl was sobbing hysterically. All he could do was sit there.
He returned to the shadows.
