Nature at Work

I was outside on a smoke break, and since we're right on the river, I usually wander around near the banks to see what I can see. I've seen snapper turtles over a foot in diameter, all manner of water fowl (including Canadian geese, mallards, egrets, what I think might be cormorants (but I might just be making that up), little piper-looking birds, ( Read more... )

Garter snake. My dad's property is lousy with them. Very pretty and a sign of a fairly healthy ecosystem, but once you've had to scrape one out of a lawnmower, they start looking like up-jumped worms.

Heh. Snakes. Beats giant bugs!

Yeah, once I got back into the office, I went digging through my dad's library (he has just about EVERYTHING - at least 60 (probably more like 120) books just on biology) for books on snakes and found a few. I deliberately did an image search for garter snakes and found the one that looked most like the snake I saw.

I enjoy nature, but also have a very healthy respect for it, which is why I didn't just pick up the snake off the bat.

I can only imagine how sucky having to clean one out of a mower would be. :P
