Nature at Work

I was outside on a smoke break, and since we're right on the river, I usually wander around near the banks to see what I can see. I've seen snapper turtles over a foot in diameter, all manner of water fowl (including Canadian geese, mallards, egrets, what I think might be cormorants (but I might just be making that up), little piper-looking birds, and the ever-present seagulls), other birds, really cool spiders, muskrats, and - although I've yet to actually see one - footprints that could belong to river otters (I DO know that they used to be here before the oil spill).

Anyway, today, I was out meandering, and came across a little snake in the grass. I was about 98% certain it was a garter snake...but for all I know (given the location), it could have been a baby water moccasin or something...so I merely followed it instead of picking it up.

I tried to take a picture of it with my phone, but it was too quick - or I was too slow, but it kind of looked like this:
