Recently, Howard Stern signed a five-year deal with the Sirius Satellite Radio Network. Eminem is also collaborating with them and starting his own radio station, Shade 45, which debuts October 28th. I figure I share my thoughts on the wonderful world of satellite radio with all the recent media coverage. It’s still not very popular yet, and lots of people are wondering if it’s worth the money. We have it at home from our satellite TV, and I think it’s the greatest thing to come out since, well, normal radio.
Neither Stern nor Eminem would get me to sign up for satellite radio. I’m not the biggest fan Eminem. I don’t like hip-hop and I’m sick of seeing his face everywhere. As for Stern, I never really listened to his show. I investigated on the internet and it’s apparently filled with political insight and all sorts of intelligent babble. Alls I heard was sex and strangeness. Seeing the biographical “Private Parts” was the nail in the coffin. I think he’s an idiot, but for some reason I listen to Mancow everyday (I love his political discussions). Nevertheless, the Sirius CEO says Stern “is an entertainment force of unprecedented recognition and popularity in the broadcast world, who is capable of changing the face of satellite radio and generating huge numbers of subscribers for Sirius.”
If that’s the case, then satellite radio is here to stay. . With all this recent media coverage, I’m hoping people get convinced to sign up for either one of these. There are two major providers, XM and Sirius. XM has a few more music channels, but Sirius has more news, sports, and variety. Both are excellent, and you’ll always have something to listen to. If you’re into music, and you’re sick of all the same ol’ stuff on FM radio, get satellite radio. Aside from 88.3, the X, this is the best place to go for all your listening needs. Whenever I’m at home and no one’s around, it’s almost always on. I flip through my hard rock, alternative, and heavy metal channels, and listen to some talk shows the rest of the time. I gave up on MTV and Fuse, so my TV’s always tuned to a Sirius music channel. I’ve discovered so many new bands because of it, and they always have something to listen to.
After the initial costs of setting everything up, which could cost a few hundred dollars, you only have to pay $9.95 a month for XM and $12.95 for Sirius. That’s where many people get turned off. It can be quite pricey (at least for a college student). If you have the cash,
