Being a Trekkie I just HAD to name my first computer after the star of the first movie from star trek, which of course was Vyger! (shatner who?) Which actually was Voyager probe (i think borg were involved! In fact, I think borg were originated by Vyger somehow), but anyway long story short every computer upgrade there after has been Vyger #. I am on Vyger 5 which is a 2003ish Dell Dimension 3200 or something like that. It was a 3900 dollar machine at time (bought to replace that shitty Alienware piece of crap, the 5000 dollar PAPERWEIGHTOF USELESSNESS). Dual core, currently sporting 4 gigs ram, and a middle of the row graphics card for the time. But alas its time to retire old Vyger 5 and upgrade.
This time however I will be building my machine. I am going for midline, but with a high processor. So the stats will be:
Q9650 with 12 MB Cache 1333 fsb and 3 ghz QUAD core
Now I considered this long and hard, between the 9650 and the Extreme 9650 and the tiny fraction of a difference just doesn't make it work 900 extra bucks to me so oh well moving on to...
8 GIGS ram upgradable to 16 GIGS
I am thinking Win XP Pro - until Win 7 comes out which i like better then vista.
We are liquid cooling.
I was conflicted between DUAL and QUAD Graphics cards, I am still conflicted, leaning toward DUAL while I do video editing i dont think I do enough to justify the extra cost of QUAD. I am looking at a 2 GB Quad system, but still have not decided between Nvidia or Radeon, I am thinking of getting the phyx processor, but not sure yet.
I plan to spend a grand total of 2k on the machine, total. With case, and all. Of course i first have to save up this amount but its going to happen. The goal is a video editting gaming mesh that will allow me some sanity because the two laptops drive me batty and simply put you cannot build a laptop for the same price that can do what i can do witha desktop
A comparable laptop would cost nearly 4-5k and have no battery life oncesoever.
