I love being an RA at my college. But closing check-outs suck. College students are pigs and live in filth. I had to deal with so much attitude when I kindly suggested that people clean their rooms. As a rule, if your room is not clean and the furniture is lofted, you will get a fine. So I got called to rooms where students told me they had moved everything out and their room was clean.
Instead, I walk into room that have visible layers of dust, pizza crust, spilt soda, molding bread, underwear, hair, USED CONDOMS, and other god-knows-what particles on the floor. The bathroom toilet, showers, and floors are even worse. I don't understand how people can live in these rooms and breath in the toxic air. I was literally coughing from the dust bunnies that were flying around my face whenever I touched a piece of furniture. When I kindly suggested that they use a broom to sweep before they leave, I was met by furious glares. Looks were exchanged between impatient parents, like 'why is this bitch slowing my kid down when he has to leave'?
I ended up helping some students clean their room and unloft their furniture-which is not my job. One person actually told me she didn't care if she got fined for the trashed room, she just wanted to get the hell out of there. I also heard some guys complaining about me as I walked away. My feelings got hurt-I'm just a person trying to do their job, and help the students not get fined. I am not a neat-freak like my mother. And there are different standards of hygiene and cleanliness for each person. But I draw the line when I can see insects crawling across a toilet seat.
