Summary: While clearing out some old caches on the Grid, Tron and Sam come across something unexpected.
A/N: Again, this is total and complete crack. Written for shirozora, who kindly gave me permission to post it to the world.

Sam has no idea why he thought spring-cleaning the Grid would be a good plan. Well, technically it's cache clearing, but he has to check every single one to make sure he's not deleting something important. Most of it is old files, backups that have long since been superseded by new code.

"Last one today," Sam promises both himself and Tron as they haul open the heavy door that leads to the next vault. Tron looks grateful, probably as frazzled as Sam is thanks to the dull, repetitive task. Tron had insisted on accompanying Sam in case any of the caches contained malware or other dangers, but they hadn't found any so far. "After this we can go and - what is that?"

There's a robot unicorn standing there. A full-sized, actual, robot unicorn, all shiny metal and rainbow mane and tail. Sam stares at it, mouth open, for about ten seconds before he realizes that Tron's laughing. It's a soft, affectionate chuckle, and Sam manages to tear his gaze away from the metal monstrosity in order to gape at Tron.

"I remember these from the early days," Tron says when he finishes laughing. "Some sort of game design that Flynn was planning on, but it never got past the prototype stage. I think he preferred lightcycles to - oh, what did he call them?"

"Unicorns?" Sam suggests, sounding slightly strangled.

"That was it." Tron sounds pleased, and he walks forward to the unicorn. "I wonder if this one still works?"

"Hey, Tron, wait, are you sure . . ."

Tron ignores him completely and swings himself up onto the unicorn's bare back, looking effortlessly natural there. "I helped to test these out. I don't know why, but the test runs always made Flynn laugh."

Tron reaches up and pressed an area between the unicorn's ears. The spot clicks down momentarily, and the unicorn comes to life under Tron. The rainbow colors of its mane and tail, static until now, begin to ripple and flow hypnotically as it shakes its head and sidles towards Sam. Tron controls it immediately, and it stills its feet. For one bizarre moment, Sam wonders how his dad managed to get it to move so realistically.

"Want a ride? It's strong enough for two," Tron offers.

Sam's always been a city boy, more at home with Ducatis than horses. In fact, he's rarely seen one that wasn't on the other side of a TV screen. Dubiously, he looks back at Tron, and Tron snorts as he reads Sam's expression.

"Oh, come on. It won't hurt you. I promise."

Sam shakes his head, smiling. "I guess not. Okay, yeah. Let's go for a ride."

He approaches Tron and the unicorn, and Tron extends a hand downwards. Sam reaches up, but before he can take Tron's hand he finds his arm grabbed, and then he's lifted into the air and somehow ends up astride the unicorn. He forgets just how strong Tron is, sometimes.

"Hold on to me," Tron instructs. Sam does as instructed, possibly a little tighter than necessary due to nerves he'll never admit to, but Tron doesn't seem to mind. The unicorn turns and walks sedately out of the vault door. Sam can feel the ripple of Tron's thighs against his own as the program guides the unicorn using nothing more than the pressure of his legs.

They make it out into the streets, and passing programs stop and stare at the sight of their champion and their User riding something they've never seen before. Sam's getting used to being up on unicorn-back now, though the ground is still further away than he'd like it to be.

"Want to go faster?" Tron inquired mischievously.

Before Sam can answer, they move into a trot, and from then into a canter before Sam can feel too badly bounced. Then a gallop, and Sam shuts his eyes. The world is going by at a speed equivalent to being on his Ducati, and Sam realizes that the unicorns are far, far faster than any horse could ever be.

There's a lurch, and then everything suddenly goes smooth. Sam can still feel the unicorn galloping, but he can't feel the impact any more.

"Now there's a sight you don't see every day," Tron said, sounding utterly at ease.

Sam cracks his eyelids open, and wishes he hadn't. They're flying, actually flying over the Grid on the back of a rainbow unicorn. There's a rainbow light-wall spreading out behind them, marking their passage across the sky. Gripping Tron even tighter, Sam grabs his courage with both hands and forces himself to look around. He's struck again by the stark beauty of the Grid, the dark buildings and the blinding neon that outlines them. Tron's right, it's an amazing sight. Sam sighs, relaxes and presses a kiss to the back of the program's neck. "Thanks for showing me this, Tron."

"Any time, Sam."

The warm rumble of Tron's voice eases away the last of the apprehension, and Sam smiles against Tron's shoulder. "You know, it's a good thing this isn't a classical unicorn. Doubt we'd have ever gotten near it."

"Excuse me?"

Tron's bafflement hits Sam's funnybone, and he laughs out loud. "I'll explain later," he promises. For now, they can enjoy the sky.
