Continueing with my climate change rant:
One of my friends was making fun of me for trying to conserve gas and shopping at the mall vs. picking up one item and driving further because windsheild wipers would be cheaper at WalMart. I told her my reasonings, and she said "Wow, you're really serious on this conversation thing". Yes, I am. And somehow that launched us into a discussion about global warming and she said it's not real, I'm not considering outside opinions, and that everyone is forced to believe it. I said, what about the ice cores and CO2 trends from the Mona Loa ice core? She said it didn't matter, and it was all natural. I was so upset at this that I had to go unload on a friend.
Yes, there are different opinions, and there's something to be said about approaching science (especially science put out by a government body) with a high degree of skeptism. I'm totally accepting and willing to listen to people who can back up what they believe with scientific arguments. But if it's just "natural" or (my favorite) "God said so" and there's no science to back it up, well... it's hard to respect that.
Finding that type of apathy here in 25-days-to-go-and-a-wakeup ensigns blows me away. We're all getting minors in engineering. We're smart cookies. There have been warming and cooling spells, and these were caused by changes in orbit and other things, but we just can't ignore the fact that we've dumped so much carbon dioxide and methane into the world without expecting some kind of effect. Closed systems don't work that way.
So there's a huge race right now to fix the problem and develop other energy sources to keep our earth at a healthy living temperature for us....Resource distribution is changing, coastlines are disappearing, and we've got a committee led by a general to determine how this will effect homeland security. The term "climate refugees" has been coined. And there's people running around who don't recognize it as an issue.
Unbelievable.
On a completely different topic, I hate being around the mall right now.All the swimsuits and summer clothes are out, and I'm ashamed of my body because I hurt something and haven't been able to run lately, and the pool is closed down.
