Last week I was asked to send a photo in of the person I was running in honour or memory of. Of course, I am running in honour of all the people that have suffered from Leukemia and Lymphoma, especially MellowJohnny. However, I am also running in memory of a man that I never met in person. He came into my life through one of my best friend’s and he left the world and our lives before I could journey out to Vancouver to give my final approval. Before he passed away, I briefly got to talk to him on the phone and assure him that his love would be supported by her dedicated and loving friends and family.
His name is Naveen and he was a doctor in Vancouver, a darn good one I’ve been told. His last post on
his blog included this:
Some of you who have followed this humble blog since its inception may have known that I was lucky enough to have survived a run-in with cancer a few years ago. Although I won that little battle back then, it appears I have lost the war. Cancer is a rather merciless predator, and despite the best efforts of a wonderful group of colleagues, it has returned. This time, I am told, it is terminal.
It has been a wonderful trip, filled with joyous memories, painful tears, and the brilliant heartache that comes from a life of boundless experience. I have lived only 35 years, but I have lived them well. And so I have no regrets, but that I couldn’t longer and better know the girl I love - my miss giraffe.
This disease took a wonderful person and ever since his diagnosis and passing, I wanted to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It is in memory of this person that I run 42.2km this Sunday. Much love to his family, friends, co-workers, and my amazingly strong friend, LittleMissGiraffe.
