Greetings from Lisboa! The time is currently 5am on wednesday and I cant seem to fall
back asleep; I think the 8 hour time difference here has screwed up my internal
clock a bit. I arrived here on Monday evening and had an interesting first night. Wrote down the wrong address for my hostel and ended up wandering around the city after 40 hours of traveling until 2 am. Found a room for $40 which is more than I can normally afford but it was oh so worth it at the time.
Im now staying at the lazy crow youth hostel in the Rato district; its a
nice place which just officially opened, very laid back. Did a little
sight-seeing yesterday with some people from vancouver BC who are staying in my
room. Bought a bottle of portugese wine from a supermarket up the street and
stayed in last night chatting with some of the travelers here. Ive realized
that when people from other parts of the world travel, they really travel; the
girls from BC have been here for 2 1/2 months and a couple from australia I met
are on their 5th month of an 18 month trip around the world. I talked to a
fellow from Singapore who goes to Rice university in Texas about Asia for quite
some time. Its so interesting meeting people from all over the world who have
been all over the world, its something you dont experience too often anywhere in
the States (Man Ive only been here two days and Im already referring to America as "the states"). Anyways, planning on staying here one more night. Going to go on a
Rick Steves "do it yourself" walking tour of the barrio alto district tomorrow
and check out some cathedrals. Time permitting im going to go back to the
castle on the hill I visited yesterday since I forgot my camera in the room and
the views are too picture worthy to pass up. Ill most
likely head to Lagos sometime on Thursday. Slowly getting more comfortable
speaking in another language. Ive been practicing the basic phrases and now I
actually kind of enjoy the fact that not many people in the city here speak
english. Well, I think Ill puruse the internet some more and either go back to
bed or stay up until Ria the hostel manager makes some coffee. Ill try to update on here as often as I can.
