Catastrophic Hard Drive Failure

Jul 01, 2003 16:21

My external firewire drive is dead. All 45 gigs of data are locked onto the hard drive with no way for me to get them off. I did some checking around... and it turns out that it is indeed the drive itself that's broken. So I look into getting data recovery... and I'm forwarded to a nice guy, but he only does PC stuff, he gives me the number of a local place so I call them. The person on the phone has such a heavy accent, I doubt I would have been able to understand him if he was speaking his native language. I managed to get the information out of him that they do data recovery on mac drives and I got the address. He wouldn't give me a quote over the phone, though. So I go to the web and look at the company that LaCie reccomends (they are the company that made the drive in the first place) and I call them up. The person on the phone is nice and says that they would almost certainly be able to do it. So she lists the prices... I was almost speechless... between $500-$2700 for data recovery on my drive... Needless to say, I don't have that kind of money to spend on stuff that's not all that important... So yeah... I'll keep the drive and hope that the price comes down somday... I've got one more avenue to explore... but if it's too expensive, no dice.

Amazingly... I'm taking this rather well... apparently I don't care all that much about the data as I'm not all that upset about it. My sprites and comic are gone... but I've got them uploaded... so while I've lost the original psd files, I've got the jpegs still. Same goes for my CGs. Hmm... ah well.
