dangermousie, in some ways, sums up Seeley Booth pretty succinctly.
1. He's tough.
2. He will CUT you if you mess with his woman.
3. As protective as he is of Bones, he still needs to lean on her a lot.
4. He will go down swinging if that's what it takes.
5. Did I mention tough?
I love Booth. I don't normally go for alpha males, but in the case of Booth (and more specifically David Boreanaz) I make an exception. Booth is a perfect blend of macho, humor and vulnerability though. Bones meets him at a point in his life where he's lost a lot of the macho posturing at its most annoying. He's got a kid, he's been through a messy relationship, he's got addiction issues and some serious guilt issues. Booth's ego is quite mature when he befriends Bones. And Bones, for all her straight forward pushiness, is a very insecure person due to her background. Booth sees a need to protect with her and he latches on so tight that I think she is sort of a vital part of his life now. They're friends first, but with Booth there is a possessive aspect. From the moment he jammed a gun in a mob bosses mouth and threatened them to keep away from Bones you know that this is a guy who is quite willing to break every rule in the book to protect her. The only other person he acts that way about is his son. He hides evidence to protect her, he risks his life repeatedly to protect her, he is constantly trying to protect her emotions. I think Booth originally saw someone who was screwed up and needed protecting and inadvertently started healing himself in the process. It's Bones's bluntness that has made Booth face different aspects of himself and ultimately made him a better person.
I watched The Headless Witch in the Woods again tonight and was struck by the scene where Booth is arresting the guy Bones was on a date with because he killed his brother. The whole time Booth is watching Bones, not the guy. It's to such a point that he's almost not even paying attention to the suspect.
The thing that's interesting is that Bones lets him be so aggressively protective. He's about the only thing in her life besides Angela who won't let her down, and Booth seems to have stepped into the protective role that her father and brother left open. Maybe she lets him get away with it because she's NOT been protected for so long that it's nice for her to have someone she can let her guard down around. She has complete, unshakable faith in him as her white knight and he has complete faith in her intelligence and goodness. For all her awkwardness, Booth sees the almost childlike openness that is Bones in all her wounded glory and he tries so hard to keep her from hurting any more.
