So a sweet little weekend was spent in Verona these past few days. A most relaxing and stress reducing one to say the least:). I had so much free time I shaved off the burns:). Im like a whole nother person again... ("you crazy man... you crrraaazyyyy"). So I have a flight out of this hemisphere and plan to be drinking lemonade on the 17th of April:). I'll also be having many chocalate chip cookies and some Ben & Jerry's Half-Baked ice cream... I dare you to try and stop me;). After the whole Roma events that wrap of this shindig called "studying" abroad I'll be going to the southern coast of Italy where the best beaches in all of Italy await me, a little place called the Italian Riveria:0 (thats my O face going... OOOO YEAH!!) :). After a few days I head off by train to a town on the eastern edge of "the boot" and catch a ferry to Corfu, Greece where I'll be staying at the Pink Palace, , and I expect it to be an absolute treat. Im going to be getting a tan, reading Angel's & Demons (because its based in Rome and I was so just there), and cliff jumping. Did I mention I was going to be in Greece (Im going to live my own myth) :) YES! Coming back is a true test of the endurance. In a time frame of two days I'll be catching a ferry, then catching a train, then catching a bus, then hopping on a plane (to London for 30 Euros. WOW), then catching a bus, then hopping on a plane, then getting in a car, then drinking lemonade and petting my dog:). All of this has been tediously planned out by yours truly and will cost no more than $100 bucks. I'll essentially be traveling for 22 hours by the end of it. Am I crazy... Yeppers. Will I have the time of my life in the process... Yeppers. Will I say yeppers one more time... Yeppers:).
Yesterday to releave all my stress I went for a loooong run. Actually it was a planned long run but it turned into something even better. I took an alternate route this time, running near the river on an unpaved path, I stumbled upon 40+ people playing basketball in a park. Immediately a smile popped on my face. Remember that smile you got when you walked into Toys R Us for that first time... yeah that was me:). I walked over and started up a game with some guys on a far court. Eventually getting over the competitive, good person court we (a cool guy named Andres and I) royally whooped up on some Italians. The best part is that I couldnt speak Italian and everything they said was in Italian. They took a liking to me and by the end of the 3.5 hours of basketball I got the nickname USA:). So every time I drove the lane or packed someone they would all be yelling "U.S.A.!!!" (but sounded more like "Ewww. S. A."). I looked really good because they dont play the same as we do in the states. For one they like don't jump for rebounds and they don't check it in. So once you score and get the ball at the top of the key the game starts again. Their defense was actually worse than mine too... imagine that Sparling;). That night ended with a wonderful Stir-Fry dinner prepared by Jenny & Ellie and a watching of the movie ELF. First movie I watched in like 2 months. It was fantastic.
Today, I went to the Verona Hellas Football game against their bigges rivalry, Genoa. Apparently this was the biggest game of the year to Verona because the Hellas lost to Genoa in the B-league championship game last year and they wanted some bloody revenge. About an hour before kickoff we were sitting outside the game enjoying a rather odd looking but amazing tasting sandwich from some stand when I riot broke out:). It was CRAAAAZY. We think the other team was arriving in their busses but yeah... The Verona fans were going crazy throwing bottles and shooting fireworks at them. The riot police busted out of the swat van in full riot gear breaking some skulls with their riot shields. The crowd began to get numbers behind it though and they broke out the tear gas. Next thing we knew roman candles were being shot in the direction of the police and the bottles were tossed in the police's direction. Tear gas was EVERYWHERE! and people were running away in mobs of people holding their eyes and covering their faces with their scarves (which are worn at every game regardless of the weather). Meanwhile, Alexis and myself were like "OMG Do you see that!! Woahhhhh... lets get a better look:)" So we wandered over in a calculated risky area and observed from afar (more or less). The game itself was pretty tight as well with Verona coming back from a cheap goal by Genoa to tie it up with about 20 minutes left in the game. The goal was amazing and the crowd of course went nuts. I have to admit I did to and I waved my Hellas Flag with pride!!!:) I wore it as a cape for the rest of the game and then was inducted into the "cool crowd" for being a "true fan";). Game ended in a tie but it was absolutely awesome. I ended today with making my travel plans. Yeah- those took awhile coordinating;).
