LOL! The Buffalo News' review of last night's gala performance of "An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin" could not have been more glowing if I had written it myself:
* "...it was clear the two Broadway superstars were going to pour every last drop of themselves onto that stage"
* "...taken the heavily tuxedoed audience on an unrelenting emotional joyride through the annals of Broadway history"
* "...and yes, her performance was consistently earth-shattering."
* "When an irrepressible force such as LuPone meets a self-assured object such as Patinkin, to paraphrase Johnny Mercer, a sonic explosion of sorts is bound to happen."
* "LuPone’s instrument, having aged like a particularly fine vintage of Bordeaux, remains a force to be reckoned with. But it is her delivery-at once quirky, defiant and self-consciously humorous - that puts her truly individual performance style head and shoulders above a great many of her more standardized contemporaries."

Oh, what a night! I'd been freaking out that we wouldn't arrive on time, but we were able to snatch the last $5 parking spot in the lot next to Shea's & still made it to our seats 10 minutes before the show started. Thank goodness we dressed, as most people were in ball gowns and tuxedos. The joint was packed. As broke college students, we had the cheap seats with the rest of the broke college students. As the young'uns of the place, the back of the balcony was ROWDY. Our cheers, thunderous applause, hollers, and whistles were high contrast to the seemingly polite golf claps of the rich geezers down front. Fun times.
The show went very smoothly, I must say. Slight problem with the house's sound system, but that wasn't anything big. It was hysterically funny ("April in Fairbanks" complete w/ swivel chair choreography), heartbreakingly sad (my mascara may have been visibly running at one point during the "Carousel" segment, I won't deny it), and generally adorable. Both brought their A-game. Those two have such chemistry! So much touching, intimate dancing, hugs, and kisses. HAWT. HAWT. HAWT. I would not have missed it for the world, and would happily go again.
No, they didn't stagedoor, but that wasn't unexpected. I was fine with it. They did their job - and did it extremely well - so they definitely did not owe us anything. We stayed until their car pulled away, then went to Prima's for dinner. A late night meal with a good friend after an excellent concert was the perfect ending to the night. I was pleased.
