It wasn't as if Edie was a chain smoker -- certainly not! But desperate times called for desperate measures. And the longer she stayed in the castle, the more desperate it felt. Today, she tried to pace herself through the last of her carton, but that brought on an entirely new level of stress as each cigarette burned away into a small pile of ash. Instead, she managed to go through the pack in record time.
Completely hopeless, she made her way outside, thinking some fresh air would make her feel better. As soon as she stepped outside, though, she swore she could feel the crisp air squeezing the last bit of nicotine from her lungs. Edie pulled her leopard print coat as much around her as she could, and sat on the bench near the front doors of the castle. But the coat didn't do much to warm her legs, clad in her usual black tights -- very unprepared for the winter temperature. She was sure no one was around, but still she made an effort to pout, looking as uncomfortable as she could manage while gracefully avoiding shivering. That's how she usually got the things she wanted. All she had to do now was wait out the cold. Or, she figured, in just a few more minutes she'd be numb enough that she'd drift into a peaceful, hypothermic sleep...at least that would keep her mind off her situation.
