Mason demands stop to bonus paymentsTories dole out $40 million in bureaucrat bonuses as 30,000 Albertans lose jobs
March 18, 2009
EDMONTON - NDP leader Brian Mason demanded Premier Ed Stelmach stop his plan to dole out $40 million dollars in bonuses to senior government bureaucrats before the fiscal year ends March 31.
"Ed Stelmach tells Albertans to tighten their belts during this recession, but he's giving away tax dollars behind our backs in the form of big fat bonus cheques to senior bureaucrats," Mason said.
"That money belongs to Albertans. It would be better spent helping the 30,000 Albertans who have lost their jobs since January find new work, than lining the pockets of people who already make $250,000 a year."
Mason compared the inappropriate bonus payments to similar ones recently exposed in the United States, involving senior officials with AIG.
