"I don't remeber the last time I slept," he said taking a long drag from his cigarette, I know it must have been over a year ago." He stood up and walked over to the window. "How can you function without sleep? I mean, how do you regenerate and all that stuff?" I asked folding my legs under myself and sitting up very straight in the chair. He walked over and laid five pink pills, five green pills and three large blue pills onto the chipped tabletop. "The pink ones are seratonin. It's the main hormone... Drug... Neurotransmitter, that's it. It's the main neurotransmitter you produce when you sleep. It keeps you in a good mood. The green ones are growth hormones. They do all the repair work that normally goes on when you sleep. Then the blue ones. They're the kickers. Those are pure adrenaline. Speed. Keep me going." He sat down again staring at the pills. "But I still don't get it. Your body needs sleep. How to you not get that need?" I asked leaning forward slightly and lowering my voice. He smiled at me, turned around, and lifted up the back of his hair. There were a series of ten scars maybe three inches long running from the top of his head, lengthways, to the nape of his neck, "See the scars?" he asked motioning to them with his index finger, "They made slits in my brain and the top of my spinal chord. I'm not sure exactly what they do but they stop me from sleeping."
