"Thanks," Daisy said, sitting down with Aiden and the young man, who seemed content for the moment just to listen.
"I'm afraid it does," Daisy said, replying to Aiden's question. "Mean what you think it means, that is."
Her thoughts drifted back to her time as a captive for a moment. The sudden and shocking gunshot wounds or knifings were far from the worst of it. The methodical "scientific" butchery was what gaver her nightmares.
Daisy shivered and then shook off the memories. "That's why they kidnapped me. They wanted to see what they could learn about me."

"A Grim Reaper." Aiden swallowed hesitatingly. "So there's more then one. I don't suppose you keep records. Who escorts who into the after life. What is the after life anyway? Is there a heaven and hell? Do you see death coming or bring it. Is there someone doling out assignments or do you just take people as you see fit? Is this a choice or are you like a whole different species? Do you work on commission?"
Aiden rattled off things, trying to ask all the questions she could think of to hopefully keep Daisy from realizing the only question she was really concerned with.
[Daisy] So many questions!sinanjuSeptember 7 2006, 05:32:48 UTC
"My goodness," Daisy laughed, "You certainly ask a lot of questions!"
She took a sip of coffee while she organized her thoughts. "Okay, from the top.... Yes, there are lots of us. Yes, we keep records--you wouldn't believe the paperwork involved!"
Daisy paused. "I can't tell you what the afterlife is like. I don't know. We're--how did Rube put it? Bail bondsmen for the disembodied. We can show you to the door, but you have to go on alone."
"We get a list of souls to take every day--or we do when we're not stuck on this annoying little island. Contrary to popular myth, we don't kill anybody. People die--or get killed--with no help from us. We're just there to help you move on."
Another sip. "Work on commission? Don't I wish! We don't even get paid! It's really very annoying. Performing a public service is all very well, but really!"
Re: [Aiden] I only care about onedet_aiden_burnSeptember 7 2006, 06:31:05 UTC
"Then there's a record..." Aiden took a deep breath and licked her lips. To say it without saying it. "I guess...someone was there?" Aiden took a deep breath and stood up from the table, walking a few steps she turned her back to them. She didn't want them to see her cry.
Her face contorted and her heart hurt. Ten years, it had been ten years but the feelings washed over her afresh. She could smell the hospital room. Her her breathing. Remember how still she was when Aiden woke up.
"Then I guess you can't tell me why?" her voice broke and tears poured down her cheeks.

Daisy concentrated on her coffee for a moment, abashed by her lack of perception. Aiden's questions weren't merely academic. She should have seen that.
She reached out to cover Aiden's hand with her own. "I can't tell you why," she said, "except that--everyone dies eventually."
"But yes--someone was there. Whoever you're concerned about, they weren't alone. There was someone there to help them. It doesn't do much for the people left behind, but by the time they cross over, they're ready to go."
Re: [Aiden] But she had only just begun to livedet_aiden_burnSeptember 7 2006, 07:16:16 UTC
Aiden swallowed. She looked down on and squeezed Daisy's hand.
"Then s...they're not scared, their ok?" Again she covered her thoughts, saying more then was really needed. Dodging. "The ones that died violent deaths, the ones on the plane who never saw it coming, the children." Another tear rolled down her cheek.
[Sam] But she had only just begun to livestarborn_scribeSeptember 7 2006, 13:45:27 UTC
For one of a handful of times in his life, Sam was glad to know as much as he did about all of the strangeness in the world. He wasn't sure how well he'd be coping with Mindfuck Island, as he'd heard a few others call it, otherwise. On top of having her worldview turned upside down, Aiden seemed to be grieving the loss of someone close to her. Sam's heart went out to her.
Sam gave the women a sympathetic smile. "It's good to finally meet you, Daisy. I'm Sam." He extended one hand and forced himself not to flinch when Daisy took it. What she'd done in his (thankfully erroneous) vision had felt all too real. "Aiden, Daisy and her friend George -- another grim reaper -- are proof that not everything supernatural is evil." He chuckled ironically. "I wish there were more exceptions to the rule. Speaking of, Dean and I are still working on the 'rules' to this place. I think we all are." He stood, adding, "Lemme see if I can scare up some hot chocolate."
[Daisy] No, not scaredsinanjuSeptember 7 2006, 15:45:22 UTC
"It's nice to meet you too, Sam," Daisy said.
Turning back to Aiden, Daisy said, "No, they're not scared anymore. Confused at first, usually. Sometimes angry or in denial for a little while, especially if their death was sudden or violent. But if it was a long time coming, more often they're...relieved. No longer in pain, no longer weak or helpless."
Re: [Aiden] I know I can love you much better than thisdet_aiden_burnSeptember 7 2006, 23:54:46 UTC
Aiden listened to Sam intently. George too? She smiled at him trying to find her some hot chocolate. It was a small sad smile, but genuine.
She turned back to Daisy. She opened her mouth slightly, licked her lips, thinking. She nodded, accepting. A silent thank you. She recluntly let go of Daisy's hand.
It was better this way, she knew. No more pain. No more doctors, and needles, and tests. She'd been too little for that, too innocent. She had suffered enough in life, she hadn't deserved to suffer any longer. No, better to leave Aiden for that. She was grown, seasoned, she could take what was left behind.
"So..." she began, changing the subject "is that why George talks to herself?"
Rifling through the kitchen cabinets in search of hot chocolate showed how throughly stocked the place was. (Either there's a huge warehouse hiding in plain sight, or this place receives shipments.)
In short order Sam found his quarry. "Hey Aiden," he called across the room. "You want DHARMA brand hot chocolate with mini-marshmallows or without?" He held the two black and white boxes up with a grin.
Re: [Aiden] smile for me.det_aiden_burnSeptember 8 2006, 03:01:39 UTC
"With thank you." Aiden smiled broadly at Sam.
"Hot chocolate's a tradition. My best friend used to make it for me. Long before we were old enough for coffee." she smiled softly. "Sides, any more caffine today an I'll be bouncing off the walls."
[Mayday] Oooh, chocolate?weirdwebSeptember 8 2006, 12:22:55 UTC
((OOC note: Deliberately not mentioning who's on watch to avoid self-contradiction.))
MAYDAY ENTERS
The perimeter check this time around had been a lot quieter than the previous night, and after several circuits around the bunker, May decided it was time to head back inside.
She waved to the person on watch (and also at the security camera), before opening the door to the cafeteria and quietly slipping inside. To her surprise, the lights were on and people were talking. She recognized Daisy and the brunette whose name she still hadn't gotten yet sitting at a table, and the guy digging through the cupboards was probably Sam. Guess she wasn't the only one keeping weird hours.
Naturally, she focused on the most important words in the conversation. "Did someone say chocolate?"
[Sam] Oooh, chocolate?starborn_scribeSeptember 8 2006, 14:44:51 UTC
"Hiya, May," Sam called. "Yeah, chocolate. Aiden's jonesin' for some with mini-marshmallows, which DHARMA has kindly provided. Want some?"
"You bet!"
"You got it." Sam filled three mugs with tapwater, put them in the small microwave, and set it to heat the water. He grinned to himself over his current company: three beautiful women. Sure, one was underage and another a very taken grim reaper, but eye candy was eye candy. He'd be sure to rub Dean's nose in it later. "Quiet watch, May? Any sign of the mysterious spiney volunteer guard?"
"Thanks," Daisy said, sitting down with Aiden and the young man, who seemed content for the moment just to listen.

"Spiney volunteer guard? Dare I ask?"
