The silence that had fallen after the team managed to get their two archaeologists back to the medical area was evidence of their worry. Daniel was passed on to the nurses almost instantly, having been protected by his shields. River Song however was a new addition to the team and had caught the most of the blasts.
People had left the room slowly as they noted how carefully Janet was tending to her. They knew she’d be fine, Janet tended to work in miracles. What they didn’t notice was that the petite brunette had closed her brown-blue eyes in a quiet prayer before starting to work.
The taller copper-haired woman lay still as Janet worked, her rich blue-green eyes closed and her breathing steady. The breathing had been uneven at first before Janet got to work, soon settling it into a regular pattern. She was soon finishing up, quietly exiting to leave the woman to rest.
Many people on other teams at the gate had thought that Janet and Sam were some kind of item, then later they’d had rumours about Sam and the new arrival, River, never quite putting it together and realising both Janet and River often had the same days off and took their breaks at the same time. Sam was a welcome friend to them, but never really featured in their plannings.
The attraction had surprised River at first, the archaeologist having only ever been attracted to men before, bar one woman, and she wasn’t quite used to having that attraction returned. Janet had been a lot more serene about the whole situation and had spoken calmly when River admitted her feelings, soothing the woman’s nerves as much as she could. The two had since been keeping a discreet distance, choosing to try and keep their attraction out of the gossip radar.
People left them alone as River recovered, not noticing how calmly Janet tended to her as she waited for her to wake. The emotions she felt were hidden under her professional cool and she often waited for the staff to leave before gently kissing River’s forehead and settling beside her for the night.
When River finally came to she found Janet at her side and smiled slightly, her voice rough as she spoke. “Let me guess, you’re the one who was kissing this all better?”
