A Stye Remedy That Is Both Effective and Natural

Whenever you have a painful stye on your eyelid, it is good to have a natural stye remedy in your medicine chest or first aid box with which you can treat it in its early stage.

First of all before finding a good stye remedy, let’s have a look at what a stye is (also spelt eye sty).

What is an eye stye?
Its medical term is a hordeolum and it is a small lump that appears on the inside or under the eyelid or on the eyelashes.

It is generally harmless and is caused by a staphylococcal bacterial infection of a hair follicle from which an eyelash grows and can occur at any age, although children are prone to getting them.

An eye stye can sometimes be confused with a chalazion. This is a lump on the eyelid caused by a musous gland that has blocked under the eye. A chalazion is painless, whereas a stye is definitely painful! Look at natural treatments for a chalazion cyst.

Symptoms of an eye stye

- Watering of the eye
- Pain in on the eyelid or in the eye especially if you touch it or blink
- A gritty feeling as if you have something in your eye
- Sensitivity to the light
- Redness, tenderness and swelling of the eyelid
- Blurred vision in the affected eye
- A small yellowish spot in the middle of the stye caused by pus collecting there

An eye stye is similar to a common acne pimple that can erupt on the skin in other parts of the body.

If the stye is persistant, conventional medicine often suggests a course of antibiotics. The downside of using them is that they can batter your immune system and leave you vunerable to further infections. Recurring styes can be due to a vitamin A deficiency. Whenever possible use a natural stye remedy.

Always wash your hands thoroughly before treating your eye.

Natural Stye Remedy

1) A stye can be treated at home simply by applying a very warm, wet and clean cloth to the tender spot. This should be done four times a day for about ten minutes each time.

This accelerates the formation of the head of the stye. Once it has ruptured, the pain will quickly diminish as well as the pressure and swelling.

2) Together with this, wash the eyelid with a very gentle soap and warm water to prevent excess oil from the hair follicle being secreted and becoming a breeding ground for the staph bacteria.

3) Applying a slightly cooled chamomile teabag that has been steeped in boiling water onto the affected area can sometimes work.

CAUTION - do not be tempted to use a boric acid eye wash. The risk of boron toxicity makes this practice potentially dangerous. This is definitely not a recommended stye remedy!

4) The following herbs taken INTERNALLY ONLY are a wonderful combination to use as a stye remedy or to prevent a stye if you periodically suffer from them:

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) is a liver tonic and lymphatic cleanser. Herbalists have traditionally used burdock for skin conditions, such as sties, boils and carbuncles.

Forsynthia (Forsynthia suspensa) recognised in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a "cooling"herb, has been shown to inhibit viral and bacterial infections, including staphylococcus, streptococcus and salmonella.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is gaining popularity for its natural yet potent antibiotic and antiseptic qualities. Herbalists have prescribed it for more than 100’s of years to treat inflammation of the eyes.

Echinacea (Echinacea Angustifolia) is one of the most popular immune boosters. It not only supports the body’s ability to fight its own battles by enhancing our immune response, but it also has its own antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.

Honeysuckle (Lonicerae japonicae), like forsythia, clears the "heat" of infection and inflammation and alleviates the swelling of sties. A natural antibiotic, it has been shown to inhibit viral and bacterial infections, including staphylococcus, streptococcus and almonella.

Chrysanthemum Flower (Chrysanthemum marifoli) is used in the treatment of many eye conditions for its antibiotic effect. It is useful in relieving heat in the eyes, such as in the conditions of sties and conjunctivitis.

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) has been shown since the Middle Ages as a universal eye remedy for both internal and external inflammatory conditions.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a very effective herb when used externally as a compress to help with inflammatory conditions of the eye.

Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus) is an astringent herb that helps to break up excess mucous in the eyes.

Marigold, also referred to as Calendula (Calendula officinalis), is a very effective herb in the treatment of inflammatory conditions when used externally (taken internally it aids digestion).

The above herbs are combined in an excellent remedy for both styes and conjunctivitis, called Bio EyeEase which is to be taken by mouth.

5) Acupuncture also has a lot to offer, not only in helping with the current eye stye symptoms, but also in prevention.

The Chinese Medicine approach is in understanding that an eye stye is not only caused by an external infection, but also internally by an imbalance in the stomach and spleen meridians.

These are responsible for the transportation of fluids around the body, including the eyes. When this is sluggish, there is stagnation of fluid in the eyes causing a stye to be formed.

As a stye remedy, there are points that can be stimulated, both on these meridians and also locally around the eyes. To do this you need to use a microcurrent stimulator which not only finds the acupuncture points you are looking for, but also treats them.

This device is excellent, not only for the eyes but also for many health problems. I can really recommend investing in one of these as you will find so many uses for it. I often use one in my clinic as it provides an effective alternative to using needles.

Precautions

- Don’t put your fingers in your eyes as this can spread infection from your hands.

- Don’t be tempted to squeeze a stye - let it drain by itself or dry up. This will usually happen in 4-5 days.

- Avoid using or sharing eye make-up when you have a stye.

- Contact lenses should not be worn during a stye infection and while it is draining.

Wherever possible I would suggest using a natural stye remedy as it will help nature to gently heal itself.

If there is any doubt about the seriousness of an eye condition, the wisest course of action is to visit a professional immediately, through an emergency room
if circumstances dictate.

A natural eye stye remedy if normally do the trick. If you are prone to getting an them, then keep your favourite remedy at with you. The one I use is Bio EyeEase as this is gentle and effective.
